Full description

Developed by the team responsible for Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion for Game Boy Advance continues the side-scrolling mix of action and exploration first introduced in 1987 on the 8-bit NES. As Samus Aran, a female soldier encased entirely in gadget-equipped armor, players must journey to a mysterious planet to investigate an abandoned research lab populated by hostile alien species. Samus' redesigned suit of armor can fire missiles, perform speed dashes, and morph into a ball so she can drop bombs to reveal new areas.

Samus can also learn new moves, many of which are hidden or acquired after defeating bosses, including the ability to climb walls, grab ledges, and move hand-over-hand by gripping the ceiling. In a departure from previous games in the series, Metroid Fusion has enemies inhabited by parasitic power-ups. Shooting an alien releases a flying power-up that can be caught for extra health or additional missiles. If a power-up evades capture, it will seek to reunite with the fallen host and bring it back to life. Or, it may go off in search of another life form to inhabit.

On her way to Planet SR388 with her exploration team, Samus's spaceship is attacked by an unidentified life form. Samus is mortally injured and loses consciousness. The life form attacks her and gnaws at her body-it is a parasitic creature, the "X". Collect classic weapons and find many new items and elements that will help you work your way through the celebrated game play in this eagerly anticipated title. Uncover new mysteries and a thrilling, dramatic story line that gradually unfolds during the course of the game. Bursting with action, Metroid Fusion is being developed by the same team that created the earlier games. Relive the same fantastic style of exploration that gradually unfolds and the same great play control that has defined Metroid games. See Samus as she's never been before-with new items, new actions, new appearance.

Editorial review

Metroid Fusion is a side-scrolling action game that's more in line with the series' NES origin than its GameCube contemporary, the first-person action game Metroid Prime. In this one, players take the bounty hunter Samus on an extermination mission through a research facility to kill X parasites--nasty creatures that absorb and assimilate the powers of their host. After she survived an X attack through the use of a vaccine made with X parasite DNA, she can now absorb the parasites to regain health and obtain special powers, like the morph ball, space jump, and wave beam. The problem is that the parasites are quickly making their way through the research lab's many dangerous projects and subsuming their abilities.

As a special bonus to GameCube owners, Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion can each unlock special features in the other game via the Nintendo GameCube Game Boy Advance cable. For example, by completing Metroid Fusion, you can unlock the original NES version of Metroid in Metroid Prime. By completing Metroid Prime, you can unlock Samus's fusion suit for use in Metroid Prime.
