Abstract

You've played it in the arcade, you've conquered it on the home consoles, now try out the best handheld version of MORTAL KOMBAT. Loaded up with 20 classic MK characters, the tournament continues replete with the special moves and fatalities that made this franchise the undisputed king of fighting games. Try to defeat each opponent in two out of three fights, advancing through each round of the tournament. Carrying on the tradition of bloody action and focus on sheer brutality, this installment most closely resembles MORTAL KOMBAT 3.

ESRB rating

Blood and Gore, Violence

Full description

Mortal Kombat has arrived on the Game Boy Advance, complete with the digitized character models and graphic violence that helped define the series in its mid-'90s heyday. Mortal Kombat Advance is most closely based on Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, a 1995 arcade game which later became available for the SNES, Genesis, and Saturn consoles. Some changes have been made to the portable version, however, as the game features only fatalities and "friendships," not "babalities," "animalities" or "brutalities."

The game contains 26 playable characters (three of which must be unlocked), ranging from the heroic Liu Kang to the evil Shao Kahn. The 2D-based gameplay remains faithful to the series' combination of traditional martial arts, ranged attacks, and special moves. There are five levels of difficulty to choose from, as well as four "destinies" for single-players to conquer. Two players can compete in "1 on 1 Kombat" and "2 on 2 Kombat."

The first home versions of Mortal Kombat were significant in leading to the establishment of the ESRB ratings system in 1994, and while Mortal Kombat Advance is the first Game Boy Advance game to receive an "M" rating, fatalities and blood can be turned off for those who want a lower level of violence.

Classic Mortal Kombat action returns as you defend the Earth against the most lethal fighters from Outworld. Immerse yourself in battle and prepare for the fight of your life as you enter the world of Mortal Kombat Advance and discover what awaits you.
