Abstract

Ahoy, mateys! Come aboard the good ship Hispaniola and set sail in search of buried treasure in one of Disney's most critically acclaimed adventure classics presented in its original, uncut theatrical version! In his first all-live-action feature, Walt Disney has vividly brought to life Robert Louis Stevenson's timeless tale of buccaneers and buried gold. Authentic locales, rich color photography and musket-roaring action set the stage for the stouthearted heroics of young Jim Hawkins and the skullduggery of that wily, one-legged pirate of all pirates, Long John Silver. Aye, for the kind of excitement that only treasure and treachery can bring, there's no better destination than TREASURE ISLAND.

Full description

A cinematic sci-fi adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, Disney's Treasure Planet supplants the novel's sea-faring antics with an intergalactic setting; solar-sail ships are commonplace, as are cyborgs, mutants, and shape-shifting creatures. Mimicking the events of the animated feature film, this PS2 title details the adventures of Jim Hawkins, who, accompanied by an assortment of characters, sets out on a quest to find the fabled Treasure Planet. Guided by a holographic map, Jim will have to explore numerous worlds and complete the tasks set before him in order to activate the requisite number of beacons that will lead him to his next destination. Five objectives are presented to the player in each world, including such duties as collecting 100 golden drubloons or acquiring ten Green Energy icons, among other level-specific goals.

Though he's capable of punching and kicking his way through the hostile worlds, Jim will often need to enlist the aid of Morph -- his floating, amorphous sidekick -- to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. By finding and using "Morph Pads," the little creature can transform into helpful implements, such as giant robotic arms with which to obliterate doors or pick up heavy objects, or even a jetpack to facilitate brief flight. However, these abilities can only be sustained for a limited time. A second gameplay format, solar-surfing, breaks up the standard action and sees Jim riding atop a hybrid windsail-hoverboard contraption. In these segments, players will race against the clock, perform rudimentary extreme sport tricks and, yet again, acquire important items, such as drubloons.

Familiar faces include the likes of the cyborg John Silver, Captain Amelia, and Dr. Doppler, all of whom assist Jim as best they can, offering advice and tips along the way. As is often the case with movie-based games, resource material has been taken from the feature film, offering animated cut-scenes and other rewards designed to please fans.

Treasure Planet brings Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson's epic adventure of bloodthirsty pirates and buried treasure, not just right up-to-date, but into the future - a future in which the spaceship Legacy is over-run by mutinous pirates, led by the cyborg, John Silver.

A combination of platform exploration adventure and space flying game, Treasure Planet takes all the most exciting parts of the film and adds it's own compelling storyline. The game sees you controlling Jim Hawkins across a series of beautifully realised locations. You'll explore derelict mines and caverns on far-off planets; investigate thriving spaceports; evade and fight enemies with a precision laser pistol and put yourself to the test among the many perils of space on your rocket powered surfboard, the high-speed Solar Surfer.
