Full description

NBA Live 2001 provides the selection of real-life teams and players and the honest gameplay that fans have come to expect from the Electronic Arts NBA Live series of basketball games. The camera follows NBA superstars across the 3D court as they pass the ball, set up plays, and take the shot. NBA Live 2001 improves on the standards established by its predecessors with enhanced AI and better player models. The improved announcer commentary, more encompassing crowd noises, and more detailed action in the stands and on the bench make for a realistic, ambient arena. NBA Live 2001 also offers a challenge mode, in which players gain points by performing extraordinary feats like winning by a large margin or sinking several consecutive three-point shots. These challenge mode points can be used to unlock bonus teams and other special features in the game.

EA's basketball powerhouse is back, and bigger than ever. Here are some of the new improvements this game will feature:

Online Community-Enhanced Chat & Match-up with the fast, easy-to-use Match-up System. Enter the online Lobby to set up a game, chat with friends, and more.

Enhanced Franchise Mode- Execute more realistic blockbuster trades with up to 3 teams and 15 players using the new trade interface.

New Player Interactions- See player personalities and emotions come out on the sidelines and in game: Players argue calls, celebrate a key basket, encourage their teammates, and more.

Complete control in low post- Back a defender down and then select from a number of different post moves such as an up and under, jump hook, and turn around and fade away jump shots. Feel the contact and battle for position, then finish off your defender with two the easy way.

EA's NBA Live series is nothing if not consistent. Superb graphics, thrilling animations, and real TV-style power basketball are what it delivers. Realism and statistical accuracy are important, but often fall by the wayside in favor of presentation. In short, NBA Live has always been a bit lazy with the fundamentals, but then again, so is the NBA in general.

However, the NBA Live series has consistently delivered a whole lot of fun, and NBA Live 2001 is no exception. Every NBA player is modeled and rendered in the game, including many basketball legends. This means you can play as or against basketball greats such as Magic, Dr. J, Wilt Chamberlain, and Abdul-Jabbar. Every NBA team is here, every court is rendered, and you have several cool options at your fingertips.

You can play a straight-up NBA season, exhibition game, or playoffs. You can play the 1999 Lakers vs. the 1984 Lakers if you wish. See if Shaq and Kobe have a prayer against Magic and Jabbar. You can also play one-on-one up to three-on-three on a blacktop half court. You can relive the video game magic that was the classic 1-on-1: Jordan vs. Bird, or, for even older readers, 1-on-1: Dr. J vs. Bird. Multiplayer options make this even more fun for some rousing two-on-two action on the court.

The controls are fluid and easy to learn, making for surprisingly accurate basketball action, but you'll need a gamepad with as many buttons as possible to take advantage of all of Live's moves. There are four difficulty modes, so you'll find a challenge every time you play. Whether you're a hard-core or only casual hoops fan, NBA Live 2001 is sure to impress and keep you dunking all season long. --Bob Andrews
