Crude Humor, Fantasy Violence |
Full descriptionAlthough stylistically influenced by the manga and anime released in the interim, Blue Dragon Plus is a direct sequel to Mistwalker's original on Xbox 360 -- at least as far as the story goes. As for the play of the game, the DS-exclusive sequel is an action RPG, with exploration and combat that takes place in real-time (unlike the console's turn-based original). Blue Dragon Plus was co-developed with Brownie Brown, and plays in a style similar to the developer's Heroes of Mana and Magical Starsign games for DS. Players use simple stylus strokes to control a small squad of heroes who explore maps and battle monsters. All character move about and fight simultaneously, but the action can be frozen at nearly any time, allowing players to ponder tactics, chose characters, and give precise orders. The action also stops automatically when a character prepares to use a shadow power, giving players a chance to choose the right abilities and plan their attack. There are 16 playable characters in all, including Shu, Zola, Kluke, and Jiro, General Szabo the mechanical man, and a few new allies as well. Each has strengths, weaknesses, and a powerful shadow monster to control. Blue Dragon Plus takes place a year after events of the first game. The world has been split, opened to the core, and now consists of thousands of cubes. For the Good King Jibral, Shu and his friends join Zola to face a new and sinister threat: an enormous three-headed dragon called Balaur. Blue Dragon Plus' original story was written by Hironobu Sakaguchi, with art by Akira Toriyama and music by Nobuo Usmatsu. More than 30 minutes of computer-animated 3D movies tell the tale between missions. Editorial reviewSource: AmazonThe DS sequel is set one year after the original Xbox 360 title and returns players to the story of Shu and his companions, who control powerful phantom shadows. In the DS title, they will have to deal with new enemies spawned from the devastation wrought in the first title. At first glance, you might mistakenly believe Blue Dragon Plus to be a strategy game in the style of Final Fantasy Tactics, with little hand-drawn heroes and monsters arranged on an isometric 3D stage. But once the fight begins, everything starts happening in real time and you must feverishly put together your plan of attack, because those enemies aren't waiting for your turn. You command your units around the field with quick but simple controls that rely totally on the touch screen. You tell your units where to go, who to fight, when to heal, and when to move to special areas on the map. It seems like your attention is constantly needed everywhere at once, but the game gives you some room for error by providing a high number of healing items. Also, as you progress through each map, the game occasionally pauses to let some part of the story play out. The game will feature a thirty-hour quest as well as the ability to control up to sixteen humans and Mecha Robos in real-time battles and shadow fights. After one year passes, the world consists of a myriad of "cubes" that exploded from the planet's depths when it split open in the course of the battle with Nene. And when King Jibral spies a strange phenomenon emerging from a mysterious, distant cube — the enormous and sinister Shadow of a Balaur, a three-headed dragon — it proves to be a harbinger of further turmoil to come.
