Abstract

Bo and Luke Duke are racing to town to pay the mortgage on the farm when they get hooked up in one humdinger of a mystery putting Boss Hogg on their trail. The Dukes need help to get out of trouble and make it to the bank on time. Get behind the wheel of the General Lee, Daisy's Jeep, Cooter's tow truck, and even Uncle Jessie's moonshine truck. You'll hit the road at breakneck speeds, mastering over 40 spectacular jumps to foil a pack of carjackers and staying ahead of Sheriff Roscoe P. Coletrane.

Full description

Thanks to reruns on cable TV's The Nashville Network, The Dukes of Hazzard has reached a new audience. Featured as a prime time network series more than a decade prior to the release of this Arcade-style racing game, The Dukes of Hazzard spawned a ColecoVision cartridge in 1984. Now, with The Dukes of Hazzard: Racing for Home, PlayStation owners can get behind the wheel of the General Lee and try to foil the mischievous and downright criminal dealings of Boss Hogg, the fat blowhard in the white suit, and Rosco P. Coltrane, the inept hick sheriff.

The single-player game consists of nine episodes. Each episode is divided into three scenes. Here are just a few of the mission objectives you must complete: find and rescue Uncle Jesse and stop his truck; take part in the Hazzard Overland Race to try and win mortgage money; find Boss Hogg's car and pull it over; and rescue Daisy Duke (the Southern babe in the cutoff shorts) from kidnappers. While racing through each mission, you must avoid cop cars, speed traps, road obstacles and other hazards.

Most of your time in this game will be spent helping folk heroes Bo and Luke Duke drive the General Lee. Certain missions require that you drive Daisy's jeep and Cooter's (the scruffy, but tenderhearted redneck) truck. In addition to racing for pure speed, you can jump ramps and perform other stunts and tricks. To help you stay in the race, power-ups (such as arrows, dynamite, nitro, oil slicks and toolboxes) will appear on and beside the track during each mission. Among other uses, these tools and weapons can assist you in repairing the General Lee, shooting out tires, boosting your speed and slowing down opponents.

If you want to play The Dukes of Hazzard: Racing for Home with a friend, the following options are available: Time Trial, in which players compete separately for the best time on a given track; Race, in which players race against one another; and Run the Jug, in which players compete for the possession of a jug. In the latter of the three two-player games, competitors try to collect the jug power-up or tag the other player's car. The player who holds the jug the longest is the winner.

Just like in the original Dukes of Hazzard television show, country singing legend Waylon Jennings provides narration. Voices of series regulars James Best, Ben Jones, Sonny Shroyer and Tom Wopat (as Luke Duke) are also featured. The voices of Catherine Bach, who played Daisy Duke, and John Schneider, who played Bo Duke, are conspicuously absent. The Tractors provide original music. Thanks to the wonders of computer animation, several scenes of the storyline play out between each episode of the game.
