Produced by Final Fantasy series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Lost Odyssey is a role-playing game that follows the unusually long life of a man named Kaim Argonar. Kaim is sentenced to live 1,000 years, and through that time, his loved ones will perish and his world will become a more uninviting place. Players will experience Kaim's day-to-day activities as well as his involvement in a larger story arc that finds his world succumbing to a hostile threat's reckless industrial expansion. The development team behind the game includes a number of notable Final Fantasy series veterans, including acclaimed music composer Nobuo Uematsu.

The story is primarily told through cinematic cut-scenes, while combat involves random encounters and turn-based battles with a party of adventurers. Instead of watching characters initiate attacks, however, players can influence the strength and power of melee swings by holding and releasing the right trigger at the precise moment when two rings are aligned around the target. Many enemies are also imbued with one of four elemental properties, allowing players to choose specific attacks to take advantage of weak points. Lost Odyssey spans four discs worth of content, offering optional side quests, secret treasures, and hidden boss characters in addition to the main storyline.
