Abstract

Go it alone or collaborate with as many people as you can fit in your living room as you create your very own role-playing game. RPG MAKER gives you the tools, but the ideas and execution all come from you. Write, design, and map out every detail from the storyline to the dungeon designs. Every cutscene, introduction, and game ending that you could ever imagine is possible, and all it takes is your imagination and hard work. You can even take some extra time and design and animate all of your own characters!

ESRB rating

Mild Animated Violence

Full description

In RPG Maker, players with absolutely no programming experience or prior game-production skills can make their own role-playing quests and save them to the PlayStation memory card for themselves or a friend to enjoy. The world creation in the game is tile-based, and the entire game is done in the 2D style of 16-bit era RPGs. Players can create characters, towns, dungeons and script action to move along at a certain pace. They will place treasures, enter dialogue and create events that are triggered by certain actions within the game world.

Although players can create nearly anything they like with the game, it must be more or less contained in a fantasy theme, as the only graphics available adhere to that specific genre. Within that genre, however, the possibilities are varied, and you can make your new RPG a massive epic or a short jaunt. It can be utterly serious or laced with juvenile humor. Also contained within RPG Maker is a mode called Anime Maker, where those with the desire can create 2D pictures and animate them accordingly.

Ever want to try your hand at making games? Now Agetec has delivered a timeless masterpiece that will help many gamers fulfill their dream of constructing a video game--albeit a role-playing game--from scratch.

With RPG Maker for the PlayStation, would-be game designers can finally create their own digital world. All you need is a PlayStation, a little imagination, a lot of time, and you can create your own Final Fantasy, Ogre Battle, or Dragon Warrior adventure--sort of. It takes teams of 50 to 100 people two to three years to design and create the RPGs that we play today. If you think you've got the patience to do it on your own, then this game (or should we say set of tools) has a lot to offer.

Write, design, and control everything from the story line to dungeon designs, to organizing and constructing the towns in your game. You can even choose item locations, weapons, and enemy hit-point totals. Such standard, modern-day RPG elements are all at your disposal here. For those who really want to go for all the gusto, you can design and animate your own characters from scratch! The animation quality doesn't approach a Disney level, but at least the option is there.

This isn't a plug-and-play type of title; it will take you quite some time just to figure out where you want to start. If you don't have the patience to play a traditional RPG to the finish, then you might want to pass on RPG Maker. For everyone else, there's no better place to start! --Todd Mowatt
