As much as I love point and click adventures, Runaway 1 was a mixed disapointment. Graphically it is superb, with bright and cartoonish detail and great cutscenes. The interface is very easy to use. There is voice acting, but sometimes you wish there wasn't. Many performances, the main characters the most guilty of all, give extremely dry and wooden performances. The puzzles are interesting and engaging enough (although some have ridiculous solutions, and many things are very chronologically dependent), but this game is no Monkey Island. It can't decide if it's tyring to be a drama action adventure or a comedy and it fails in both respects. The wacky characters just aren't all that funny, and the serious characters are so boring you don't really care about them. The plot could have been interesting but the way it folds out, you start questioning why the protagonist should want to help the female lead anyways. But it was intriguing enough that I'll give the sequel a shot. |
