Hello everyone,

Here's a thread dedicated to under appreciated playstation games. Thanks to goozex these classics (that's right; classics, how time flies) are easily accessible. As a pre-teen I chose a N64 over a PSone. Don't laugh! At least I got to play Zelda OOT and you know that other good game on that system... Anyway, it wasn't until the PS2 when I had access to the old school full motion video goodness. I caught up over the years, the popular games that is. Now I'm look to enlighten and be enlightened by PSone that were great but for some reason forgotten. I'll start! And come on, no rpgs please. No one will be impressed by your Threads of Fate knowledge.

1. Tecmo's Deception.

No, this is not a game about how tecmo made you think Bo Jackson was the best NFL player in the universe. OK picture this: Your in a old dark gothic castle. I know what your thinking and it's the wrong franchise. In this game the castle is your haven and people try to brake in and murder you. That's right, they flipped the script Surprise <--- (Your mind being blow). Your a weak, slow walking individual that knows magic. No, your a not a wizard. Instead of casting magic missile, you place horrid skull smashing traps. Were talking spanish inquisition sh*t. Spiked walls, 200 pound rocks, acid gas, spears, springs that shoot you into fire places, the usual. You pause the game to lay the traps out checker board grid style and walk/run for life in real time. The point is to be the bate and lead the evil doers into a Eternal Champions fatality. The jackasses trying to kill you start out at 1978 Dawn of the Dead speed and then slowly move their way up to 2004 Dawn of the Dead speed. And don't worry about the storyline, it's not important.

Well I recommend this game, especially for the 100 points it's going for. Come on guys, they give you that for signing up. But be warned! I don't know how well this game has aged. It's spawned more offspring than a redneck; so if you want to play this game with more traps and better graphics, pick up one of sequels. Their was even one on the PS2 with the most thought out title name, "Trapt".

(Edit: I just looked and Trapt isn't on goozex. If someone will would be kind enough to add it, I'll be the first to put it up for trade.)

So, anyone else have one?

Anyone have any thoughts on which of the Deception games is the best? I think there's 3 of them.

And is Trapt any good at all? The reviews were horrible (worse then the ones for Deception I think, but I may be wrong on that). I tend to disagree with reviews, but still.

I wouldn't use the word "horrible". It received reviews like 6.8 (gamespot). Hell, ign gave it a 7.5. Remember when I said don't worry about the story? That's because it's pretty laughable, in a cheesy B horror movie type of way. That could be a plus for some. Anyway, I think Trapt was the best out of all. But only because of it's graphics. They all pretty much play the same, some a-hole comes into kill you and you drop him into a pit of spikes. Well, I don't remember if you can do combos kills like in Trapt. I recall catapulting this one jackass into the middle of the room; then dropping a rock on him; then setting of an explosion next to pillard, causing it to fall over and crush him. Very satisfying feeling.

Anyway, this thread is not about how great a review a game got. If it did have great scores it wouldn't be unknown and forgotten. We're not on the hunt for collector gems, but something that will be fun for a week or two. Something that deserves the long awaited attention. Hell, these are 100 point games. So don't get too mad if it's only fun for a day. The taste of a well aged quality PSone game on our pallet is what we're looking for.

So anyone want to contribute to this totally awesome thread?

Alright, because this thread isn't jumping like I thought, I'll add another great lesser known PSone game to the list.

2. Destrega

Was there a great 3d fighter before Power Stone? Yes and it was Destrega. Now like in Tecom's Deception, the story isn't real important (very Japanese and flamboyant). Like in any fighting game, you had a cast of characters. Some good, some evil, some asexual. Let's get to what's so great about this game. Instead of hand-to-hand combat, you shot out magic beams at each other. Like in Mortal Kombat, their's light, medium, and heavy attacks. Of course, light attacks are faster while doing less damage and heavy attacks being slower while doing more. The point is to run around in a 3d environment dodging, hiding behind objects and shooting beams of light (their's also a ninja who shoots shurikens, ninjas rock!) to defeat an opponent. If you get close enough to the enemy, you unleash a badass 10 hit melee combo just by hitting a singel button. So the common strategy is to trap someone behind a rock with suppressive fire, while getting close enough to dish out 10 consecutive blow to the head. And what's a fighting game without huge special attacks. That's would be good ol' boring Virtua Fighter. Here, then you have the energy, hit any three combinations of the attacks to blast out a kamehameha of doom that shoot through hiding places and does a half of bar of damage. Over all, it's a great game to play with a buddy and is high recommended by me.

Deception is a good series. A little slow paced for the average gamer, but if you can get past its coal-like exterior, you'll find a diamond of a game.

Deception 3 was definitely one of the better PSone games I acquired cheaply.

To add to the list:

Dino Crisis 1 and 2: When people think of Capcom's survival genre, they think of survival horror a la Resident Evil. The Dino Crisis series is a good entry into the survival genre and the gameplay mechanics are very, very similar. If you enjoyed the RE series, try Dino Crisis. You'll be impressed.

I completely forgot about those games. Jurassic Park meets Resident Evil, who can resist that? Add beer and roommates with good senses of humor to the equation sounds like a good time. Well I guess roommates plus beer is a good time anyway, but that's besides the point. I'm definitely add this to my requests. Good addition to the list.

I found Deception 3 to be the most fun but the other too were great as well. I've never played Trapt and I'd like to get it.

Persona 2 Eternal Punishment is a great RPG from Atlus. I still play it every once in a while. It's not often that you get the chance to play a dark themed modern day RPG.

I heard of Persona but never played them. They are hard to get, aren't they? Is the second game better for some reason? RGPs are a good time in my book.

Yea the second one is better. The first persona had you go through dungeons in first person and you could get lost so easily.

First post, be gentle... heh

I am going to have to go with Koudelka and Kartia.

Koudelka is precursor to the Shadow Hearts series, very dark as well as hard to see, but it gets the job done in the end.

Kartia is the second tier of SRPG games, but it was always something fun to play with.  People often feel that Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactic Ogre are the top tier but this little title should be up there too, at least in my opinion!

And while we are on SRPG's, how can I forget Vandal Hearts?!
