Random Fallout 3 GOTY question

I am currently playing Fallout 3 GOTY for PS3.  I just completed The Pitt quests and when I returned to downtown to claim my gear I was missing all of my ammo.  Only the ammo that I had accrued during The Pitt quests showed up in my inventory.  I was wondering if anyone else had this problem or knows of any solution.  I am really picky about saving all my ammo and had such a huge stockpile I hate to start over from square one.  I did happen to store my inventory in a mailbox outside the gate before I began in case the slavers took all my stuff and I couldn't get it back, doubt this makes a difference but just want to put down all the information.  Any help would be appreciated.

I have not played the GOTY edition, but I know Fallout 3 has been quite buggy (especially on the PS3)... it sound like you might have gotten screwed by one of the many bugs in the otherwise solid game :(

As ridiculously buggy as Fallout 3 is, I always had whatever items I placed in a container or even a dead body when I came back to them.

Yes this is what I was thinking.  It seems pretty unlikely that the ammo just disappeared because of a bug.  I definitely have lag and freezes and bodies shooting into the sky among other things but this just didn't seem like a bug situation.

When you found your gear, was it only weapons and armor?

There is a locker or footlocker next to the girl that runs the arena. That should be where your gear/weapons/ammo/etc are located. The person at the entrance to the pitt takes everything and places them there until you win all three fights in the arena.

I never trusted putting items in a random box outside of the home due to the game respawning items.
