Not to say 1 is bad, far from it. I very much enjoyed it. But there were several things that I found to be rather annoying. The game seemed to like leaving you in the dark several times about where to go, most annoying is the Necklace Puzzle since the camera angle obscures the path to reach it, and you don't even know about the puzzle until about 20 minutes later. and on the subject of the Red Necklace. some of the puzzle rooms were annoying as well. Most notably the spike room box puzzle which involves pushing a box to a wall before spikes come up from the floor and impale you. In the collection they actually subtracted 4 seconds from the time making it even harder. And then the QTE's. Don't mind the normal one's so much but the rapid button press one's bordered on ridiculous. they felt like they were designed to be used with turbo controllers as it seemed no matter hard I pressed I would still somewhat frequently get thrown off the minotaurs.
I'll probably still play 2 and 3 regardless as overall these were basically slightly stale oreos on an otherwise delicious icecream sundae. Just curious if 2 and 3 were a little more polished in those areas.
I felt that 2 and 3 where better in this sense, although it's been a while since I've gone through them. I too remember that whole necklace puzzle. The camera angle really was bad for that one. 2 and 3 on the other hand, were more obvious in what you had to do and where, although you were still left to solve the puzzles on your own, which is a good thing.
Yea, I don't want stuff handed to me on a silver platter, but some indication about what to do would be nice. And for timed stuff a reasonable amount of time to complete it. I mean I was watching video guides from the original version of 1 and people were barely making it through the spike puzzle and then for the collection they remove 4 seconds?
I had no problem completing GoW1 (i loved it), but I got frustrated by GoW2. It's not that it was hard, but the puzzles were poorly constructed. The main complaint of the first game was that it was too short, so what did they do? Add more puzzles and more crappy bosses. The game has no flow. I was very disappointed with it. I haven't played GoW3 yet so I don't have an opinion of it yet.
I'd say that 2 was an probably an improvement in most areas. A big problem I felt the first game had was that you spent a good half of the game running around in the Pandora's Box temple, 2 had more variety in locations and did a good job of keeping things moving. I think I got lost in 2 once, but that was more a case of me being stupid and forgetting what I was supposed to be accomplishing. In my opinion 2 had some even more obnoxious QTE's, but that could just be me sucking.
To be honest, I'm wasn't really enamored with either game. They're definitely well made, but I guess the gameplay didn't really do it for me somehow.
I think the part you are referring to is titled the 'Cliffs of Madness' so I just assumed that it was supposed to confusing as hell. As for the fixed camera angles, you're stuck with them throughout the rest of the series. I did notice a few of the QTE's late in GOW II, the timing gets a little more critical as you progress, but I thoroughly enjoyed the series overall and found GOW III to be quite polished while staying true to what fans expect.
Ventara: I felt that 2 and 3 where better in this sense, although it's been a while since I've gone through them. I too remember that whole necklace puzzle. Agreed.
The best I could do on that damn spike box puzzle was to have the spikes chase my feet into the air as I left the ground. I was carried up to the ledge not by jumping off the box, but by the gust of air as the box exploded beneath my little Spartan piggies.

I was pretty meh as you are on GoW. I hated GoW 2, but thought GoW 3 was one of the best games I have ever played. So I would say keep going, if for nothing else to get to the masterpeice that is GoW 3.
That stupid box and the spinning walls were the most annoying things in that game. I don't understand how they think it's fun. Died more times on those parts than I did the rest of the game.
GoW1 famously has some of the most hated puzzles ever. GoWII is one of the best action games I've ever played. Don't sweat it.
Oh, and read my massive review of the whole trilogy if you like. :)

Gow 2 the puzzles difficulty was about even through out the game, unlike the first game. Gow 3 the puzzles are simple or lame or both like the music box puzzle.
I have the GOW collection sitting on my shelf, and I have yet to touch it. I never played the games on PS2, so eventually I will try them out. lol
Allllmost snapped my controller in half when I was doing the 'push-the-box-before-the-spikes-kill-you challenge". So far GoW2 cuts down on the silly problem-solving puzzle assignments, but there's still an abundance. Still great games, though.
I manage to overcome it after over 20 tries the first time I played it, I felt over joy when I finally reach the top.
I plowed through the trilogy recently and concur that the original is by far the most frustrating, ESPECIALLY that freakin' spike room...lol.
The other two are not nearly as frustrating, and 3 wasn't that difficult at all, save the fact that the wings you eventually acquire in 2 seemed to only work half the time in the 3rd game, leading to many unnecessary fall deaths for me...lol.
