I know this forum is more for discussion of TV shows but I am looking for some input on buying a new TV to watch said shows. Currently looking to upgrade from a 32" Insignia (Futureshop brand).

Been looking at the following two models and was wondering if anyone has any other input.

LG 47" LD650 (can't seem to find much info on this one anywhere)

Sony Bravia 46" EX500 (only 120Hz but seems decent)

Also willing to consider other models if they're good TVs. Looking for something around 46-47", 120Hz min but prefer 240Hz.

Both of those TVs exceed the requirements of what is discernible with the human eye. So basically, just get whichever one you can get a better deal on. As for 240Hz, it is completely useless, basically a marketing gimmick to get people to buy new TVs ("look it's twice as good as 120Hz!").

I was pretty hung up on that for a while, until I read some reviews on a bunch of LED TVs.  I changed my mind pretty quick and for what I was willing to spend I can get a much bigger TV Big Smile

120Hz is sufficient.  Make sure it has enough HDMI ports though, I fell down on that one when I first bought our big screen back in 2006.  The solution ended up being a A/V receiver, which for the amount I spent on it could have been a TV with more inputs.

edit:

I used this site when I was shopping for my receiver and speakers:  http://www.consumersearch.com/lcd-tv

If I remember correctly they site external reviews and provide links to them for my depth.

240hz was the latest and greatest when I bought my TV in 2009 it seemed, as only a handful of TVs had it, so I was a little sad I didn't get one with it.  Having used my TV for over a year now though, I'm quite pleased with it and don't think my experience would be much improved had I gone with the far more pricier 240hz edition.

OP - Futureshop is having a sale on some of their TVs.  Might be enough to bump it up to LED if you're interested:

LCD TVs

LED TVs

edit:

@ IWX:  That's almost as bad as devy recommending plasma.  This isn't 2002 Pizza

I have a Sony Bravia 120hz and a Samsung LED 240hz and the LED is noticeably better so if you can swing an LED I'd go for that.  If not then the Bravia would be the way I would go, you can't go wrong with it.  As for the difference between 240hz and 120hz I doubt there's anything you'll notice, I'm pretty convinced the difference I see is just because of the LED and not the 240hz.

I've spent hours in Future Shop staring at their TVs, most of them being 120hz and the only difference I really notice is a better colour saturation/palette with the LEDs vs LCDs.  The image looks a bit crisper too.  It also sealed the deal and got shesnrice on board.

edit:

Disclaimer:  I have piss-poor eyesight.
