Ok, this is kind of out of the blue, but I got my new 360 today (the S model) and love it so far, but that's beside the point. While I was waiting for it to arrive, I idlely had a thought about getting a slim ps3 as well, which lasted for 3 seconds until I remembered that they took the BC out (I have an original 60gb model). This got me to thinking: how many other systems throughout console history actually got WORSE, or, more specifially, had features REMOVED with the later incarnations. I could only come up with three clear cases: the ps3 losing BC, the original genesis losing the headphone jack in the redesign, and the PS2 losing hard drive support with the slim. Other systems certainly got worse (the nes moving from an interior cart slot with a door to a completely exposed vertical one), but I just talking about totally removed features as part of a newer model. Actually, another one occured to me, so I looked it up: the Sega Master System. From wikipedia: "It designed the Sega Master System II, a low-cost Master System that lacked the reset button, expansion port (which was never used), and card slot of the original. Since the card slot was used as a connector to synchronize the 3D glasses with the original Master System, the SMS2 couldn't use the 3D glasses." So what others ones are there out there that i'm forgetting?

That's the main one that comes to mind.

The NES removed the Composite video output during the redesign that introduced the better top loading cart slot.
I'm a little miffed that my 360 remote doesn't work with my new S console.

Is there anyway to change the remote code so it does?

Wow, I never knew they took out the card slot on that. Screw the 3D glasses, that system actually had some games on cards. So they eliminated the ability to play some games of that generation. Crazy.
Let's not forget the GBA losing GB/GBC support with the release of the Micro, and the DSi losing GBA (and various accessory) support with the removal of the GBA slot.
Interesting, because mine does.

What? I could have sworn hatter mentioned something about using a HDD with his slim.
edit:
In fact I'm so sure, I'm willing to be his life on it.

I'd be curious to hear more about this, for if I ever replace mine, I'll need a remote for it that works.

Which 360 remote is it? I have the small one that came with launch consoles and it works just fine.

Some cheesy third party one that I'm sure has no name or brand. Works great with my current model, but I've no clue what it'd do with the new one.
I suppose as long as I can get another cheesy one for the new edition of Xbox it wouldn't be a big deal. I'm not terribly invested in the one I have now ($5 total maybe when new). I just feared the new one wasn't remote friendly.
Sony also removed support for Linux OS on the PS3, correct?
The NES change to a top-loading system was an improvement, although replacing component cables with only an RF switch is a pretty notable downgrade.

These don't really belong.
While not a true sequel, the DSi clearly has more functionality than a regular DS Lite. The ridiculous size reduction of the Micro can also be viewed as a worthwhile feature for a portable system. In both cases features were added, the change only occurred at the tail end of the generation anyway, and other models were still available with the old feature set.
PSP Go might seem like a better candidate since it drops features at a more expensive price... but even there the smaller size, physical redesign, and continued availability of other models is enough to give it a pass. People who want a PSP just have more options available (even if some of the options do seem questionable).

That is nuts. Some of the best games were cards. Transbot and Ghost House!
