I'm getting a new PC soon and am wondering what are some games that I can check out that have been released in the last few years. I like FPS games (multiplayer games of UT and Quake 3 Arena style), RPGs (Diablo and Dungeon Siege), and RTS (Heroes of Might and Magic, Starcraft, and Supreme Commander). Any ideas of what I might like?

Here's a few you might check out:

-Fallout 1&2

-World in Conflict

-The Witcher

-Crysis & Crysis Warhead

-Stalker series

-Unreal Tournament 3

-The Orange Box

I still need to get these, but they all look like great games.

Supreme Commander 2 just came out, you will enjoy if you liked the first one.

Torchlight (Diablo clone) might be of interest.

+1 on The Witcher, great game.

Legend : Hand of God was a decent Diablo-type game.

With the prevalence of consoles, it's hard to find exclusive PC gems, but there are many titles that just play better on PC, so if it's your primary platform there are still many options.

A good choice on SupCom.  Be sure to avoid the second one if you loved the epic feel of the original...I preordered it and now regret it.  The amount of units to choose from has been more than halved, there is no teching, and the maps are small.  Most games strain to last more than 20 minutes.

For RTSs, I'd say a surefire hit is Company of Heroes.  More intimate of a RTS in that there arent a billion units on the field, and they're squad based.  Still a gorgeous game despite being a few years old and still rather popular.

Shooters include the famous Crysis, though if you're interested in MP you may want to skip straight to Crysis Warhead, the latest derivative of the series and last I checked, more populated.  The Crysis series, despite being a few years old now, is still an admirable benchmark, so be sure you have a gaming rig if you want to explore this title.

Other shooters include the recently released Bad Company 2, though that's available on all platforms, some key bonuses are larger MP games (32 players) and dedicated servers.  Also worth checking out is Killing Floor, a UT3 mod found on STEAM that is a blast to play with others; a very straight forward wave defense game.  Lastly, most of the Source games are pure gold; Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Portal, Day of Defeat Source, and more.  If you're willing to stretch a bit more and don't want to deal with BC2, Battlefield 2 and 2142 are epic, and Battlefield Heroes is a free, browser based edition to try.

I haven't done much with RPGs these days, but I must throw out a recommendation for Torchlight.  A beautiful looking Diablo clone, this game is extremely addicting and has a very friendly pickup and play nature.  It was on sale heavily during the holidays but is easily worth its normal $20 pricetag.

Other than that, there's quirky games to suggest like Altitude, a arcadey shooter that has you in up to 20 player battles flying little planes blasting one another out of the sky, which is pretty cool and even sports the ever addicting ranks and perks as seen in games like COD to keep you coming back for more.  I got lucky and bought it on sale last week for $2, but it's certainly worth the $9.99.  There's a lengthy demo (MP included) to try.

That's all that comes to mind for me currently, though I'm certain I missed some gems.

It's actually a UT2004 mod, but he's talking about the separate retail release. If you get UT3, The Haunted looks like a fun mod.

Yea my bad.  My thought process was broken on that whole thread a bit.  Stupid work.

World in Conflict is another great addition.  A new take on RTS that allows for hop in and out play (kind of like any shooter), controlling just a few units on a team that overall makes up one army.

For a great FPS/RPG I'd recommend Fallout 3

For an awesome Diablo clone I'd recommend Titan Quest w/ the Immortal Throne expansion pack (though this came out like 4 or 5 years ago it looks beautiful compared to Diablo 2)

Ok, this'll be the first time I've really brought this up here, but the only PC game I've been playing is League of Legends.  Anyone else playing that?  It's a DOTA-style game, and the best part is that it's free.  If you want more info about it, I have a blog post about it here (http://invisibleeyeball.com/2009/11/league-of-legends-impressions/).  If you like playing competitive games online, it can be a LOT of fun.

Ya, that was a decent game.  I actually really like Marvel Ultimate alliance on PC.  I thought it was WAY better on PC then PS3.

I think the clear and consistant strength of PC game are RTS, and MMO.  If I were an avid PC gamer, that's what I'd go after.  There's other genes that they're just as good as the consoles on (FPS, RPG), but they clearly dominate on RTS and MMO.

I dispute that FPS or shooters in general are just as good on consoles. There's a reason console players can't play against PC players in online shooters... Wink
