I'm not sure about my copy of Sonic Advance. I got the game a while ago, and I can't tell if it's a real North American release, a Japanese release or if it's bootleged.
Here's a picture of my cartridge. Sorry for the crappy quality. I did the best I could.
On the back of the cartridge, there's 3 lines of writing like this:
(Nintendo logo)
Model NO. AGB-002
PAT PEND. MADE IN JAPAN
Now here's the weird part. There is quite a bit of Japanese writing in the game. On the title screen, there is Japanese writing under the title. It also appears along with the level names at the start of each act.
Is this normal, or is my copy in some way not the official north american release?
picture is too bad for anything definitive but my first impression is: why would there be a THQ logo on a sonic (sega) game?
does your camera have a closeup mode? if so try using that

At the right you can see a cartridge-only Sonic Advance 1. The art seems to be the same as your picture. So at least the art seems legit.
Look inside the cartridge at the contacts. If you can see a "(c) Nintendo" written on the circuit board, it's legit.
