Am I correct in that you do not need the original game to play this expansion?  I want to play but traded mine out already.

That's interesting.  If that's the case I'm really surprised.  I'm also curious to see if this will be like the FO3 expansion discs or if it will be a one time DLC code.

No. You will need the original game.

No - you DO need the original:

When asked whether BioWare has any plans to add standalone support for the expansion he had this to say:

"We aren't planning to at the moment but we do have some standalone games currently in development for the Dragon Age universe. Along with a lot more DLC and expansion content, so it's a mix of both for Dragon Age."

This was in the Amazon description.. did it get my hopes up?

"Awakenings is a standalone expansion, meaning that ownership of the original game is not necessary, although players of the original game are afforded the choice of utilizing their character from the original game or starting with a fresh character. Additional features include an expanded storyline, new creatures, locations and more. "

Everything else I've read contradicts that. I think Amazon is mistaken.

Well Amazon is the 1st place I have seen that states it is a stand alone, everywhere else says it needs the original DA:O game to play.  I personally hope its a stand alone and I don't need the original game (which I still have and will have, but I don't want it to take HDD space), but I don't think so.

Kind of a steep proce for an expansion.  Anyone know how long it is expected to be?  The GTA4 expansions were pretty long (from what I hear) and only $20.  I have not played GTA4 so I can't really say for sure on the length of the expansions.

Each GTA expansion was supposedly 6-8 hours each (not counting wasting time, it is GTA). At $20 a piece, that was good.  This expansion is said to be 30+ hrs according to Bioware.  It seems too much for only "months" in "development" so I have my reservations of how long it truly will be, and I do find it super expensive.   I will wait until reviews and a price drop to $20 before picking up Awakenings.

$40 for 30+ hours and people claim it's expensive???  There are plenty of 8-10 hour (even less) games that come out at $60, that I know people have bought or have pre-ordered. So the complaining here is kind of funny.

According to Amazon.ca that's $80 in Canada ($69.99+13% tax).  Still far lesser games are that price.

You can buy the disc for PS3, I thought this was stand alone, you can't play 2 BRds in one PS3...

Perhaps it installs itself or something, on EBGames.com it states that the original is required to play.

When I read that there was a disc as well as a d/l copy available, the first thing that popped into my head was how Shivering Isles worked for Oblivion.  You needed the original disc the first time you played and then never again.  So you could give your original disc to someone else (which I did) while still playing the core game as well as the expansion.

Not saying that will be the case necessarily, but it does give an example of how a disc based game can be have a 'standalone' disc based expansion that still requires at least a one time usage of the core game disc.
