This may be something everyone but me knows... but I'm confused as to what Nintendo games play on what handheld systems. ie: Do the Gameboy Advance games play on the Nintendo DS lite system? Lists of which handheld Nintendo systems play which type games would be helpful! thanks
Pretty sure:
GBA = All Gameboy Advance + Original Gameboy and Gameboy Color games
DS, DS Lite = All DS games + All Gameboy Advance games (cannot play original Gameboy games)
DSi = All DS + DSi games/DSiware (no port for Gameboy Advance games)

That is correct.

Mechazawa005: DSi = All DS + DSi games/DSiware (no port for Gameboy Advance games)
Except DS Guitar Hero since it needs the Gameboy Advance slot to play.
Also note that the Gameboy Micro plays all Gameboy Advance games, but not original Gameboy or Gameboy Color games. Of course, not many people have Gameboy Micro systems...
I think your choice between the DS Lite and the DSi comes down to what you do with your console. If you want a bigger catalogue then go DS Lite cause you can play all GBA games. If you want Dsi-Ware (i think that's what it's called) like Wii-ware then you need the DSi to download all that. Apparently the DSi also has a slightly bigger screen.
BUT, if you choose the DSi path then I would wait. There is another sku coming for the DSi. This one is an even bigger screen (market for the old folks).
thanks everyone for all the helpful info! Concerning the future dsi release... any idea if it will be capable of playing Game Boy Advance games? Or definitely not? A bigger screen sounds awesome, but I am looking to buy one to play a lot of the Advance games also.
I don't remember exactly from the pics of the DSi XL if it had a GBA port - but it's doubtful at best.
I think Nintento has moved on and I wouldn't expect to see the GBA port in future iterations of the DS. Might want to grab a DS Lite if GBA games interest you.
The lack of a GBA port was the major reason I stuck with my DS Lite instead of upgrading to a DSi.
I still have a bunch of Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance games so I held on to my GBA SP when the DS came out. I currently have a DS Lite and I could probably upgrade to the DSi since all my backwards compatibility needs are handled by the SP. However, I wouldn't give up my LoZ version DS for the world.
If you have a bunch of GBA games or older, my suggestion is to get a GBA or GBA SP for cheap and go ahead and get the DSi.
The only games that I know of that have problems with backwards compatibility are games that relied on tilt, peripheral, or light functions.
Actually, there is some info here, on the compatibility of handhelds: http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbcolor/file/916513/34105

I have nothing to contribute to this thread now, except that your username is awesome.

But what about the screen? Isn't the screen on the DS lite better than the screen on the GBA SP? And how different do the games look on the GBA compared to the DS Lite?
If you are still wondering about screen size here is a link from 1up.com published today with comparison of the current DSi screen and the DSi XL screen.

The individual screen resolution on one of the DS screens is slightly greater than the old GBA screen. When you load up a GBA game on a DS/DS Lite it displays on one screen only and has small black borders around the image.
Sold off my GBA a while back, so i'm not sure if the image looks slightly smaller side by side (DS vs. GBA) but GBA games are very playable on the DS/DS Lite.
I keep my original GBA around in case I ever want to load up an original GB cartridge Hey, Final Fantasy Legend II was a lot of fun.
