Hello,

Most of us here are avid gamers. Others play more casually, or even let their kids choose the games to play together. There are different gaming flavors and - I guess - different feelings about game recommendations. I'd like to explore more how do you perceive recommendations for games:

  • Are they something you don't care about because you know exactly what games are coming out, and what you want?
  • Are they something you may consider to try games you didn't know or other games in similar genres/topics?
  • Are they something you definitely care about because you are always looking for new ideas, or have limited knowledge of what's cool and appreciate a little help in your selection?

With this in mind, here is a short survey. As usual, I appreciate any additional feedback you may have.

What do you think of game recommendations?

(Please assume that recommendations may be tied to your trading profile, preferences, habits and past history, and provide the most fitting and personable suggestions to each user - hence the quality of recommendation is not an issue)

  • I definitely like recommendations and would try them out (15.4%)
  • I like recommendations. Though I may or may not use them, they make me feel the site "understands me" (2.6%)
  • I like recommendations. Though I may or may not use them, I like to explore the suggestions and see if I like anything among them (56.4%)
  • I like recommendations. Though I may or may not use them, I like to explore what I missing (15.4%)
  • I rarely look at recommendations, because I always know what I am looking for (5.1%)
  • I rarely look at recommendations, because they don't "fit me" well, but I may use them if they'd "fit me" better (2.6%)
  • I am just not interested in recommendations (why?) (2.6%)

I always check through recommendations when using Netflix - although usually I only try 20% or less of what's being recommended.  With games I tend to be the same way.  I don't mind seeing what else is recommended, but I may not always go with the recommendations.

I hate recommendations. A: I find them pointless. B: I know what I want C: They are embarrassing at times D: I don't want stuff recorded about my viewing habits

I think the recommendations would be an excellent idea and then for anybody ^ who doesn't want them, have an option to turn them off.

I dont really get computer recommendations sometimes. I use Netflix and they always recommend me stuff that I have either seen 5 -10 years ago or some movie I have no interest in at all. I have no clue as to why Netflix thinks I would want to watch something like Titanic or Sleepless in Seattle when the last 20 movies I rented were anime cartoons  horror movies and Mystery Science Theater Smile

I could see it be of use for some people but I tend to just do my own thing and if it coincides with a recommendation then that would probably be a coincidence. I bet if they were added to the system then every user would be recommended MW2 haha

Sounds like the system Netflix uses is strictly recommending what a) you have not watched and b) what others who rented your stuff also watched

If Goozex did this (Netflix me too style), I would probably meh it.

If the site was fairly smart, and didn't include games that are in a list I have, and actually pertain to what I have played, and not recommending a Hello Kitty game that some guy who also likes RPG's played, but got that for his little girl, then I would probably find it extremely useful. I can't watch them all.

I am in the meh crowd.  I like recommendations when they are coming from other users through the forums.  Computer generated recommendations are somewhat annoying as they are usually way off.

I chose the first option but I am leaning towards the third now.

I was actually thinking of suggesting something similar; however, I think it might be better to make it member controlled. Perhaps there could be a thing like the Hot Games this week carousel on the main page that lists the Suggested titles. The member could set what type of games should show up. For example, they could set it so that it only suggests games on a certain platform and in a certain genre. If they want to be more specific, they could also set it to only suggest a certain point range, condition, etc...

It would be like using the Advanced search except that the parameters are preset by the member, will only show up in this area, and perhaps only show games that are available.

I think this would work even better for the movies just as long as the genres are accurate.

Recommendations can be funny sometimes. Awhile back on Gamespot.com if you looked under the Comet Crash (PS3) listing, under "Games You May LIke", the first listed was "Flower", and the second was "Killzone 2".   Pretty much as opposite as you can get.

Even if some people don't want em, I don't see why there needs to be an option to turn them off programmed in. Just don't pay attention to them if you're not interested.

Interesting feedback so far. Thanks to all.

While recommendations is an idea we have often tossed around at Goozex, we have never come up with final details on how to implement it. A few the ideas suggested here would work well within Goozex. With more than 20,000 titles in the system, it's important to make it "fit" each user at best. Probably the idea of letting users choose what to recommend is good... as long as it leaves some flexibility anyway (if anyone already knows what he wants, what's the need for recommendations after all?)

I'd like to hear more...

I atleast look through recommendations just to see if there may be a gem i missed. But i am usually on top of game releases. But i would like to see user recommendations because they are gamers,i may not agree with what they like but they would have better input than a computer. Like when movie gallary did the whole let us suggest a movie for you thing,i wanted to laugh at times when they told me what the computer said.

User recommendations... this is interesting. Goozex will soon announce user recommendations using the ratings and the friend feeds. This will be our first release of recommendations provided by users, although limited to a user's network of "friends".

Sounds like a sweet idea.
