I hardly ever go to the post office unless I have to. For Goozex, I print out shipping at home and drop it in a mail slot or box. But every once in awhile I have to go and it's just painful.
No matter what time of day it is, even the less busy hours, you are always looking at a 30-45 minute wait, and typically over an hour if it's the busy periods like lunchtime or right before closing. Everybody is unhappy and tired waiting in the line, and it is painfully obvious that the post office workers are making no effort to go any faster or be any more efficient, despite the fact that line is frequently so long it's extending out the front door of the building. They take their time doing things, have side conversations, etc. They let people fill out entire passport applicatino forms and money orders right there at the window, which can be a 15 minute process. It just seems like there's no sense of urgency or incentive to do a good job or be fast or efficient, which I suppose is not uncommon in goverment jobs and institutions.
Is my post office just really really bad, or are your guys' like this too? I don't remember my hometown's post office being so slow, but that was in a small town as opposed to a city.

Mine is only slow if I go in right when they open, and all the senoir citizens are there doing their morning mailings. Any other time I'm usually first in line.
I go 2 different post office, and most of the times their not that packed, except for the one next to my house
No, mines pretty fly
Mine is usually fast. If the line is long and its not going to Canada i just use the APO and drop it in the box next to it.
I don't use my actual post office because it is in the hood (or as close to the hood as possible for my area) and has no parking. the PO in the surrounding towns aren't too bad. usually a line 3 or 4 people deep.
2 years ago, I did have the misfortune of having to ship out a game on tax day. that was a horrifying experience.
I have never had to spend more than 15 minutes in the post office and that was because they had trouble finding a package for me.
My post office is the busiest one in my area. I tend to have a 20-30 minute wait every time I go in. Fortunately someone from work informed me about a small one in a business park on my way home from work, and it is never packed. I always walk right in. I only go to my post office near me now if I have to pick up a package.
I go to the post office to mail out all my games, and I think the longest wait I've experienced was about 20 minutes (that was a few days ago actually). There are usually multiple employees working, but in the case a few days ago, there was one working and several people had multiple packages to send out. A few people in front of me actually left, which ended up being their loss since another employee finally came and opened up a counter.
I hate my post office in general, they are slow, I am pretty sure there is theft going on there, and the customer service sucks!!
My PO is terribly slow even when there are only a few people in line. At lunch time I won't even bother stepping foot in there. I only go to pick up packages too big for my mailbox or if I am mailing to Canada.
So on Saturday I managed to make it to the post office right before closing to pick up a package that online tracking info said had arrived, but I wasn't home so they left a notice in my mailbox and left it at the post office for me to pick up. I hadn't been home yet, so I didn't have the orange notice slip. The clerk asked me if I had the slip, I said no but they've been able to retrieve my packages withotu the slip if I have ID, and that I knew it was here because of online tracking info. She goes in back with my ID and comes back very quickly and says its not there, oftentimes the online tracking is incorrect, check to see if I really did receive a slip, and next time bring the slip.
So this Monday morning I come back with the slip (which indeed was in my mailbox), wait the usual horrid 30 minute line, and get the SAME clerk. I tell her I was here before closing on Saturday and that I was told the package couldn't be found unless I had that orange slip, so here it is. She gets me my package and says, "That's not true. You don't need that orange slip. You probably just got someone who was just lazy and didn't want to go get your package for you."
I was dumbfounded.
Anyways, I hate my post office.
No worries, hatter, I'm in the exact same boat as you, and it's the sole reason I don't go out of my way to trade with Canada.
Morning, afternoon, line or not, the PO is excruciatingly slow here. So slow that everytime I go I contemplate vaulting over the counter and taking care of myself. My hometown POs were not even remotely this inept.
The conflicting information each and every visit is just icing on the frustrating cake.

My local post office a tiny one man operation so near the end of the day it will be jam packed an can take at least 30 minutes to get through the line. Going during the middle of the day is much better as there are usually only 1-2 other people waiting in line and waits are only about 10 minutes long at most.
Of course, every now and then, I have to visit the larger facility which is located across town since our local office doesn't hold on to missed packages. Visiting that place is excruciating. No matter the time of day, the wait will be at least 30 minutes and upwards of an hour.
I should really start using the printable shipping option.
bizarrorollins:I should really start using the printable shipping option.
This is what I do. That way I don't have to waste my time going to the post office because no matter what it's always slow and long lines.
