I have been in the beta for MAG since the start of the second phase and I have just one word to say....AWESOME!!!
This is by far the greatest game I have ever played. I have only experienced the beta version to this point and I am so happy with it I would easily pay full game price if they didn't change one thing. The action is unparalelled, the addictive nature is like crack and the overall experience is like nothing else on a console. Pre order it now and get in on the beta which ends 11/20/09. The release date is scheduled for 1/26/2010 as of now. I will be at the store waiting for midnight to arrive on 1/25 and I suggest you do the same. This is definitely not a rent game, don't even waste the money renting just plan to buy.
I don't see how this game could be good.
Warhawk was pretty fun, but quickly became a mess on the bigger maps.
Resistance 2 was even worse with 64 people. Take two steps, get shot from somewhere, repeat. Every once in awhile you'd get lucky and spawn behind somebody. I just stuck to the smaller maps after that.
I can't imagine how bad 200+ people on one map would be. Especially since the ps3 doesn't come with a headset. I'm sure people in clans will have a ball with this, but the average user jumping on public servers is gonna get swallowed up quickly. Then there won't be much use for another mediocre action game...Back to KZ2 or R2 or Warhawk or whatever.
I'm in the beta for this too, but with the awkward M-F limited schedule, I haven't found time to bother to get on.
I'm a big fan of huge maps and player counts, but the point above me strikes true. While 64 player games on PC have been happening for some time and generally play out well, I had R2 for some time and it was in fact nothing more than a clusterf*** of gunfire in all directions. Hopefully some sort of teamplay is reqired rather than just two large zergs.

Think I'll be passing on this Planetside Console Rehash

I know exactly what you are saying and I heard this from many people and it was one of my concerns before starting the beta. All I can say is, the setup is such that you are not in a giant cluster of explosions and bullets. Zipper has done a great job at keeping the game organized and structured. Not all matches and modes are the full 256, you have choices. You can play matches as small as 32v32 if you like. I personally like the 256 matches the best but I understand that it's not for everyone. I suggest that you go to Gamestop and preorder MAG just to get the beta code. It costs $5 to preorder and if you change your mind on it you can get your $5 back. This would be an easy way to get an idea of what the game is for free. It wouldn't be like a demo because this is still the beta version and not totally like the final but at least you would have an idea of how the gameplay will be.
I know that 256 people on at once sounds like chaos but it really isn't. You are in a squad of 8 people and have objectives to complete as an individual squad and not an entire army. The reason most games with many people turn into a chaotic cluster is because everyone is trying to accomplish one goal. In MAG there are many objectives to accomplish and not everyone is working on the same thing at once so it cuts way down on the chaos.
Like I said, just go to the video store and get you a free beta code. It costs $5 to preorder and get the code but the $5 is totally refundable after you get the code. Remember that this is only a beta and not the whole game but you can get a feel for it at least. What do you have to lose? If you like FPS and you like playing in an objective driven game. If you like the idea of playing a game where teamwork is necessay for victory, then you should love MAG.
BTW. My parents are retired and never worked in the video game business. My mother was a nurse and my father worked for GM. I have no other reason to promote MAG than I really like the game and think that anyone who likes FPS will like it too. However, if you do not like teamwork then you probably won't fit into this game.
What the other poster said about if your not in a clan you won't be able to play was wrong. Sure it's great to play with others that you know and with whom you share common interests but not tottally necessary to enjoy MAG. Also, a it is designed so that having a headset is not necessary. It is great to have a mic for communication with your 8 man squad but far from necessary to play effectively.
I-Weapon-X: Think I'll be passing on this Planetside Console Rehash
I have never played Planetside so I don't have any idea of the similarities. However, your logic doesn't even make sense. Every game on the market has taken its idea from someone else. If you are going to start deciding that you won't buy games because it is similar to another then you might as well sell your consoles and PC or Mac because there is nothing new under the sun my friend. Sell every FPS shooter you have bought since Doom or Wolfenstein because they were the originals and no need to buy any others. You should have held onto your Atari 2600 because every console game today is based on one that was on that console.
Actually, to be honest, you should have never played any game at all since the Commodore 64 with the casette tape drive that I had back in about 1982 because that was probably the beginning of all modern day in home video games.
I can't believe that anyone would be so simple as to say "I'm gonna pass on this great new game because it reminds me of another I played". Good thing for game developers that everyone doesn't think like you because the market wouldn't be one of the biggest in the world if everyone thought this way.
Everyone check out the beta for free on Jan 4th, you can download it now, but the servers wont be up until Jan 4th.
Don't expect Call of Duty. This a TEAM BASED FPS not a camper kill streak game. It's about objective and strategy.
I've been waiting for a chance to try this out, as I love team-based games, and the bigger the better!
Been playing the Bad Company 2 beta, which isn't too bad. It'll need some more play time before I decide how much I like it, though.

THE BEST SHOOTER FREAKING EVER!@!@#!@#$!$!%$!@%$!@$!@%$!@$!@ I was a doubter until I got a chance to try out the game (Thanks to my bro). It convinced me to buy a copy myself. I'm a huge Modern Warfare 2 fan but, This game has sure sold me in.
Get your Portable ID!
I'm a fan of this game also. Its a lot of fun if your team actually decides to work as a squad and if you can get a platoon of 4 squads that know what their doing its a real rewarding experience
IGN review is up
7something. Graphics are a big let down, and glitches of course...
Seems ok but I burnt out on FPS online long ago, played enough SOCOM 2 and Counterstrike to make anyone's eyes bleed.

IGN is, IMO, a terrible place to get reviews. Their testers/players are terrible and they lack perspective. I haven't personally checked their review of MAG because I don't have any faith at all in their opinions. I will say though that if they gave MAG a 7 they have only strengthened my belief that they lack perspective.
If you "burnt out" on FPS long ago then I suspect your opinion of any FPS to be tainted as well. Actually MAG is a revolution in online console gaming. Not only is it a great FPS but the strategic value of the game can be found nowhere else that I know. To compare MAG to SOCOM 2 and Counterstrike is a comparing apples to oranges. MAG is a social community above all else. No other console game forces the player to socialize and depend on his fellow team members the way MAG has done.
I am a FPS Phreak! I will say that no other FPS on PS3 or any other platform has intrigued me the way this title has. I have played them all and for the most part the general FPS strategy is to get as many kills as you can while losing your life as little as possible. Previous and current FPS games would have the player believe that a high kill to death ratio is all important. MAG breaks new ground by letting the player be something much more than just a killing machine. The whole idea of every battle contributing to the outcome of an ever changing war is enough in itself to set MAG above all other FPSs. When you begin to think of all the ways a player is able to contribute to his/her PMC in this war MAG becomes an ideal in gaming that can not be compared to by any other console game or genre.
I will give you that MAG is somewhat glitchy and the graphics do not stand out against other PS3 titles but these are extremely minor issues when compared to all that MAG has to offer the player and the gaming world. The graphics have greatly improved since the early beta rounds. The few "glitches" that remain and thelack of incredible graphics are a tiny issue when you consider that the game supports 256 players battling online together at the same time. Remember that a console game on this grand a scale has never been done in history. I can't think of one game I ever played on PS3 that had no glitches being the first game in the series. MW2 still has it's problems and the COD series has had more than ample time to perfect that world.
I apologize for the lengthy post but I really think that anyone who has anything negative to say about MAG hasn't really given it an honest try. Most who have negative to say about this phenomenal game are incapable of playing a game where teamwork is key to success or they are simply fanboys of another FPS and will always be blind to the possibility that said game could be beaten in the market by any other game.
If you have played in the beta rounds or have rented MAG for a night or two and have already made up your mind that it is a poor game I urge you to rent it a few more nights and really pay attention this time to what the entire game has to offer. Try to look past the graphics that agreeably are less than stellar when compared to some of PS3s great graphical works of art (Bioshock, MW1-2, etc.). Remember that Zipper had absolutely nothing to work off of or to cheat from when designing this game. They set out to build an epic game that is first and foremost a MMO. If you are able to appreciate MAG for what it offers and not dwell on it's shortcomings I think anyone will agree that this is a revolutionary way of looking at console gaming and will be the first in a whole new generation of video games. MAG is the start of what the future of console gaming has to offer. No one can ever take that away from it.
