Far Cry 2 looked great, but I just couldn't get into it.  tried several times to get a feek for it, but it just didn't happen.

insertmedia.aspx?AppType=Unknown&ProfileSaved=trueI can imagine a world where there are no guns, no wars, and no violence. Then I can see us taking over that world, because they would never see it coming.

Exactly the same thing for me. At least I broke even on the trade-in to Goozex. I only have a limited amount of time every week to play, and this game was a little too tedious for me with its long distances between objectives and limited save points.

I wanted to love this one too, and for a little while I did, but after switching to COD MW2 for a while, then BF1943, and back, the controls and shooting felt a little muddy. Plus the repetition in the missions got to me. Wish I could have leveled to the hang glider though.

I have been digging Far Cry 2 quite a bit, but I can definately see how it can get repetitive.  Once I stopped thinking of it as a pure shooter and more of an open world superlite-RPG, I started liking it a lot more.

Love the gameplay ideas of Malaria, your best buddy being able to save you once a day, hitting crouch while sprinting being a slide, and some of the gruesome "mortal wounds" or whatever they are called you have to fix in firefights.

For an FPS GTA in Africa, I find it pretty enjoyable.

I did enjoy those parts.  I'd often run around sliding just because I could...I had a difficult time getting into the game though, but to be honest it only got the ol' college try.

Far Cry 2 is an incredibly solid game spoiled by one horrid design compromise brought about because the game was rushed to market.  It also had a crippling save bug (the worst I have ever seen in a retail product ever), which has since been fixed.

The problem with the game is the respawning, always hostile enemies.  The facts that they respawn and are hostile are okay. The facts that they respawn in mere seconds in some situations and are always hostile are not. I understand that RAM constraints on the consoles drove this problem (which is why I call it a compromise), but I am certain had Ubisoft not rushed this game to release in the holiday window, a solution could have been found.

What would have made this game perfect would have been for the enemies to be from factions depending on where they were on the map. And the enemies from the faction you were currently on a mission for would not attack you. And dead enemies would stay dead for at least a while.  Something like a Saint's Row system would have also been okay, where as you progress more and more of the map became "safe."

But I still really enjoyed the game because of how much freedom you had to do the missions. I had routes all over the maps to avoid checkpoints, and sometimes I stumbled upon really easy ways to beat missions.  The draw distance helped in that regard.

agreed Catparty... I really really like the game, and the only real annoyance is the respawning (aside from some long drives, but I think that is more of a function of a large game world)

I liked that the enemies repopulated the checkpoints, but I think it should be on a longer timeframe like you noted (maybe 8 hours of gametime or something)

I also like the idea of clearing "safe" territory as well, maybe a new quest type or something?

That was another deal breaker for me, the respawning enemies that ALWAYS shoot at you. Where were the neutral, bad luck bystanders? Ranchers, workers, just everyday citizens trapped in this war? I thought that would have added to the immersion of being in another country. When every person you see tries to kill you, it's a little silly after a while.

I think this is why I enjoyed Red Faction: Guerrilla so much, which I just finished. It was open world, populated with civilians, but there were two hostile factions that would engage you if instigated. They also don't pursue you to the ends of the map, they give up after a bit if you can outrun them. In FarCry 2, you may think you've outrun them, only to have three technicals full of rebels crash into you a minute later. It was the worst AI I'd seen in a game in a while. It didn't help that it takes 11-12 bullets to take each guy down.

I gave up on Farcry 2 pretty quickly after realizing what a chore it was to get from one place to another.

I love Far Cry 2!  I dislike the same thing you guys are talking about, but I guess it just bothered me less.  A lot of great ideas in this game, pretty well executed, too.  The explosions and fire effects are awesome.  Grenades EXPLODE, unlike in COD games where it's just a blip.  Not sure which is more realistic, but FC2's are certainly more fun.

I'll definitely pick up Far Cry 3 if the rumors are true and Ubi is working on it.
