Having just -250'ed a bootleg anime DVD set I received, I thought it'd be a good idea to inform everyone considering trading anime DVDs of a couple of things:

- A lot of anime dvds you can pick up new from mom and pop video game and toy stores are, in fact, bootleg.  Make sure to compare the UPC on the box to the one in the Muse database before putting it up for offer on Goozex.

- Ditto eBay and Amazon Marketplace.  Bootleg anime runs rampant here.

- The following companies are known bootleggers: "Animation Video," "Anime Cartoon/Manga International" (not to be confused with Manga Entertainment), "Fx" and "Anime Studio."  If the DVD set you have has any of these company logos on the spine or where the actual company logo (Viz, Funimation, etc) should be, IT IS A BOOTLEG.

Here is a FAQ on bootleg anime: http://www.jazzmess.com/merch/bootlegfaq.html

Thanks, and be careful, fellow Goozexers!

I think the best indicator is the price.  Example. Trigun goes for something like $100-$200

So if you see it for less than $50 especially considering the fact that it's out of print. Alarms should start going off in your head.

That's for the original set with the box to store all them, the complete signature series is much less than that. Also don't forget another big one is MAC which is the Dubbed side to the AC which is the subbed side of the company.

Thank you for the information. Going to have to keep an eye out if/when I get some anime series in.

Looks like you took the bullet for me on that box set, I'm the person in front of you for  that series was restricted.

I've been wary of that too, especially with me having so many box sets in my requests. I know for sure I have one that I'm not putting up (I'm actually trying to get a legit one through here, but that seems like it will be next to impossible).

Another easy indicator is if there is different writing in the back (something that isn't English, French [maybe in Canada], or Spanish [doubt, but it's possible]), or if the region code is "ALL" instead of "Region 1".

As a total aside, (looked up what box it was), Maison Ikkoku is my all time favorite manga. The anime is pretty good, but IMO it just wasn't as good as the manga.

People need to realize that a good threadjack should involve a humorous picture. Like so:

I know that right now on ebay there is a possible anime bootleg that I must buy for myself that I will NEVER trade. Higurashi full season 1 for only 35 bucks. To buy the full season would prob cost at least 90 - 120 bucks plus having to buy each disc separate (6 discs) and no one is offering it here so I am deciding on forking money over for the series which might be a bootleg. There are alot of great bootleg animes out there that offer a decent price which is why the supply is so high and alot of folks buy them not knowing that are bootlegs. I know that you shouldnt buy these things blah blah blah but sometimes the deals are just good to pass up.

I have a ton of anime, but I'm sure 95% of it is bootleg.  But the quality is great and works for me.  I just can never trade it.
