I don't see this anywhere covered, but maybe i didn't look hard enough.  My question is for trading used DVDs that were bought from say Hastings, or Blockbuster, that have stickers, or the ring around the inside of the DVD.  I don't see a problem with it, I mean its not a burned DVD.  So is it fine to trade, or are those not able to be traded?

As long as it plays fine, there shouldn't be a problem.

This is an oft debated topic.

Some users, like me, consider stickers or anything on the disc that did not come new as "unplayable disc"

I won't put a disc w/ a sticker or a "ring" or anything else that was after market into my DVD player or my PS3 for fear of damage.  The reasoning is that DVD players and PS3s are designed and tested to play discs, not discs that have been unbalanced w/ stickers or have added rings or other nonsense that has never been tested by the mfg.

Other users think it's fine.   They don't see the problem w/ stickers on a disc and  are not concerned w/ potential system damage.

I think goozex should probably take a formal position on this.  I see it as cut and dry, discs should be unaltered.  Normal wear and tear is fine for used discs, but stickers, sharpie marks, video store bar codes etc... all ruin the disc.  Sure it might "play fine" at first, but you are potentially ruining your hardware, at the very least shortening it's expected lifespan by spinning unbalanced discs in it.

Your best bet would be to PM the user you get matched with and be honest with the condition of the discs before accepting the trade.

Your right..  I will message the person whenever trading one of these to make sure it okay.

Really?

Are there any actual accounts of this? Perhaps my google skills aren't up to par, but I've been searching discs and stickers and haven't come up with anything saying it hurts a game console.

Even if a sticker did hurt a disc or console somehow, how would sharpie writing on it hurt anything?

How heavy are these stickers anyway?

My experience with stickers on a disc is that it will come off after repeated use. I am not willing to take that chance anymore. Personally, for myself, any disc with a sticker is capable of destroying my ps3 (I use it to watch movies) and therefore unplayable just because I am not going to test a stickered item. Sharpie, I'll ignore, unless someone decided to color the whole cd black thinking it's cool.

Exactly.   And also it's not "how much the stickers weigh" it's how much they change the balance of a disc.  Discs are balanced for spinning, stickers are not, sticker placement is often all over the map.

The worst IMO are those bar code video rental stickers that are all puffy and big.  If you peel it off you are left with residue.

It's a known fact that PS3 laser lens are sensitive.

Yeah, the speed they spin at, any little difference can through off the balance.  Combination of that and if the sticker comes off, or of the sticker peels off some of the label.   All 3 could either mess up the disc or your system.  Not a chance I'd want to take.

Nor I.  I worry about my PS3 daily...it's like a small child.

Oh how I hold my breath with firmware updates too!

I've also had 2 PS2s, 1 XBOX og die on my.. all 3 were disc drive failures.  I used to rent a lot of games and put sticker discs in both of those systems..
