Believe me, I'm not hating on the PS3....I want one.
Just an interesting blurb of news I thought I'd see what all your opinions were on.

Yea, I read a similar article about 10 minutes ago. It's not terribly surprising.
The unit is established, has a huge library, plays DVDs, and is by far the cheapest entry into gaming at $99. The price alone pushes it ahead of the PS3, and makes it a strong contender to the others when looked at by a shopping parent.

this has been happening with the exception of a month or 2 here and there since the release of the ps3; the PS2 still has a substantial library and a lot of games still look great
It still blows my mind that this is happening. I think MS did a smart thing (business wise) by dropping the XBOX when they launched the 360. It pissed me off at the time though.

If I didn't have a PS3, I'd totally buy a PS2!
Not surprising at all, especially given the economy. This last generation of consoles hit at just the wrong time, economically. Personally, I think the PS3's a better deal than other consoles, but the upfront cost is pretty hefty. Lots of people would rather pay less now and more over time than to pay more now and less over time.
PS2 is still a great buy, but to be honest, I'm a little surprised! I'd have thought everyone that was going to get one already had gotten one already...

I don't see how. They'd be making more money if they had continued to sell XBOX consoles over 360 consoles. They sell every 360 console at a somewhat significant loss; consoles don't actually sell at a profit until closer to the end of the run (Wii being the exception).

Well, the Xbox was the big loser of the generation, so MS was in a better position to cut ties and reset its sights--similar to Sega and its transition from Saturn to Dreamcast (though MS has a happier ending).
It's hard for Sony to drop it's profit generator even when it's cannibalizing the company's future.

actually 360s are profitable for microsoft if i remember correctly

I guess I disagree that PS2 is actually hurting Sony or PS3 sales. The people looking at buying $100 consoles aren't really in the market to look at $400 consoles, so that's not really a consideration. So Sony isn't losing anything by continuing to sell those consoles.
At the same time, they can potentially gain new fans and fanboys. As a parent goes out and buys their child a PS2 and some games, they might be introducing that child to a new series. Say Final Fantasy X or XII was a kid's introduction to the FF series, and he loves it. He's going to want to play more, so enter FF XIII. But he can't play FFXIII without a PS3. If there are a couple of series he really enjoys like that, say Ratchet and Clank, Metal Gear Solid, suddenly he's becoming more devoted to Sony because that's where his favorite exlusives are. In a couple of years once he's run out of PS2 games to play, that PS3 will be looking pretty tasty!
So, since the PS2 outsells the PS3. Don't you think the PS2 is taking potential sales away from the 360?????

Well that's taking into consideration Microsofts' entire game division. PC games, 360 games, 360 consoles, LIVE, etc. The console itself, from my understanding, still sells at a loss:
"decreased revenue per Xbox 360 console due to price reductions during the past 12 months."
It doesn't explicitly say that they sell at a loss on each console, but in the past they usually do for quite a while.

But the original xbox was selling at a loss too. The point of selling a console at a loss is to sell it at an affordable price and make up your loss in game/accessory sales and licensing fees. The original xbox wasn't doing so hot in any of those departments so MS cut ties and shifted focus to the 360.
Not a great move for xbox adopters, but a smart move for MS, business-wise.

Sure why not. You could also argue it's taking potential sales away from the PS3 and the Wii as well.

Wasn't it last year that MS started selling 360 consoles at a profit? I remember reading the article on IGN.
Not on IGN, but an article nonetheless:
yea, the ps2 is a lot cheaper and has a huge ammount of games to choose from that are cheaper. so most people who will buy a game for there 11 year old son who will be satisfied with anything, will choose the ps2 over the gaming-ultra computer
Heh. Just had a vision in my head. Kojima looks at the sales of the PS2 vs. PS3, installation base, and profitability.
Next E3, we get a trailer: MGS5! Coming to PlayStation 2!
I know, wouldn't happen for the world. But it is alarming how a ten year old system can still kick so much butt.
I wonder if this makes the record for longest actual shelf life of a console?
