First of all, let me get this out on the table. My normal genre of videogames is action adventure and sandbox games. I am also a girl and a wuss when it comes to horror movies. Now, with that said, I've grown a bit bored of all the different titles I've been playing lately and thought I'd try something outside my comfort zone. And what better way to do that but by playing a survival horror game.  The two biggest horror videogame franchies out there are without a doubt Resident Evil and Silent Hill. I played a bit of Resident Evil at a friend's house but was disappointed. It wasn't scary, just gross (I don't seem to derive the same pleasure of killing hords of zombies like other people do). So I looked up opinions on Silent Hill and alot of people think it's boring. Is that true? And do you think I'd be able to enjoy it?

I personally thought Silent Hill was kind of boring and would go for Resident Evil anyday, however you were to want a scare you might want to check some opinions on the Fatal Frame series...

Resident Evil > Silent Hill any day of the week.  Twice on Sundays.

That being said, if you want to try a horror game, might I suggest Dead Space.  I found it much creepier than any Resident Evil (except for the first RE, because that was just mind blowing at the time when it was released) and it's a little more actiony, so it will allow you to gradually get into the horror genre.

If you want action adventure and maybe a little bit of having to change your pants, I'm going to second dead space, and maybe throw out a recommendation for condemned as well (1, not 2. I cannot stress this enough. Never, ever touch 2)

if you want a good survival horror game then I would go with condemned 1. Its both fun a scary. I would recommend it over both Resident Evil 5 and the new Silent Hill game which is basically a run around and do stuff until you can unlock a certain door type of game whereas Condemned has a first person view that is very impressive --- but it is VERY violent. It also has a lower point value than both of the oher games I mentioned above.

Condemned 2 is not as good as the 1st.

I won't argue that the Resident Evil series is generally more fun than Silent Hill, but Silent Hill delivers on the things I actually look for in horror games.  Silent Hill usually forgoes cheap jump scares in favor of an unsettling atmosphere, and it's scares are usually more cerebral than "OMG! Monster in the closet!".  The Silent Hill games also have excellent stories.

With that said, Silent Hill is similar enough to Resident Evil that it may not be "your thing".  I'd personally recommend Resident Evil 4, if your looking for a great action game.  It's not very scary, but it's quite fun.

If you have access to a game cube/ wii grab a copy of Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Good times for all.

Silent Hill is one of my very favourite franchises, much scarier than Resident Evil ever pretended to be.

If you can deal with the graphics, Silent Hill 1 is THE scariest in the series, on PC and PS1. Or you can wait for the PSP/Wii remakes later this year.

Silent Hill 2 has the more contemporary and easier controls along with many of the elements that made Silent Hill 1 so creepy. It loses a bit of the atmosphere somehow, but it's definitely worth a go. It wouldn't be a bad thing if this was your first jump into the series. It's on the PS2, PC, and Xbox. The Xbox version is compatible with the 360.

Silent Hill 3 is a direct sequel to 1's story, so you should probably play 1 first. It's arguably the best gameplay-wise, but in terms of scares it's about on par with 2. It's available on the PS2 and PC.

4 was a mess. The gameplay stayed mostly the same, but it never really feels like Silent Hill at all. It feels more like some generic creepy action game. It does reference older games and fill in some holes so you should still play it, but you could get away with just reading the mythos on Wikipedia if you don't have the time to deal with it. It's on the PS2, PC, and Xbox. It's also compatible with the 360.

Zero is a fantastic Western take on 2's gameplay style. It introduced a few gameplay elements I wasn't crazy about, but nothing bad enough to put it in with 4. It's the prequel to 1, but it's structured in such a way that you can play it before or after playing 1. It's on PS2 and PSP, but it's general consensus that the PSP version is the superior version since the PS2 port has a few technical issues.

Homecoming is a lot more run-n-gun action, not so much real scares. It is cerebral, but nowhere near the scare candy of 1-3. It's worth a play still, but it's so much more action than fright that I'd barely call it a Silent Hill game. I'd say it's about as scary as the first F.E.A.R. It's on the 360, PS3, and PC.

Dead Space, Condemned, and the Fatal Frame games are also fantastic choices. Fatal Frame especially, it's a great combination of creepiness and jump-out scares. If you have surround sound, you NEED to use it in these games.

Condemned scared the crap out of me!  I love that game!  What I love more is having a friend over and letting them play level 1 so I can crack up when they jump... hah.

Im playing Deadspace right now and it is a lot of fun and pretty creepy as well.

I traded for Condemned 2 and will play that someday....who knows when though.
