So.....There's Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and MGS3: Subsistence.
I was at a store yesterday, and got a box that just said "MGS3". Looks like it may have been out of that 3-pack set.
Did I get the original? I looked at the instruction booklet, and I know they added a behind-the-back camera to MGS3S, but see nothing there. Did they release the first run of the game in the collection?
And if I ever decide to get rid of this, goozexing, whereabouts do I list one disc of the whole set?
I was hoping to get Subsistence...but if I'm right and this is the first, what all am I missing out on?
(got this extremely on the cheap, so it's no biggie if I end up thinking I need the other)
You have part of Subsistence if it really is the MGS3 from the collection. Disk 1 of Subsistence was the same as Snake Eater; however, it included the new camera. I believe that the Snake vs Ape bonus missions are missing as they were moved to the second disk.
The second Subsistence disk has Metal Gear Online which is currently offline and likely the reason the disk wasn't included in the collection. Ports of MG1 and MG2 from the MSX computer. These are the original games that Kojima created, not the NES port of MG1 and definitely not Snake's Revenge. I believe is also has the Theater where you can mess around with putting different characters into different rolls in the cutscenes, and finally it includes the Snake vs Ape missions.
As for trading it, you can't really post it as Subsistence since it's missing the second disk and people will likely want it for the original MG ports. Your best bet is to post it as Snake Eater and message the person you get matched with. The new camera makes the game much better, but let the person know what you have and see if they are OK with it. At least it's not as annoying as people trying to bypass the queue by posting as full package and then messaging you and saying oh, I don't have the manual is that OK?
In other words, looks like I can play and enjoy the game from the extra camera setting now, and when I'm good and done with the game, maybe Subsistence will drop a few points and it'll be a cheap add-on for the bonus features.
I'll try it out tonight. The manual said nothing about the new camera angle....do you pick it as an option at the start, or is there a midgame swap?
You can choose the new camera from the start. When you start the game it will say if it's Subsistence or Snake Eater.
You will know you are using the new camera pretty quickly if you've played the other MGS games. The original camera is the fixed over the head camera from MGS and MGS2. The new camera is 3rd person and you can rotate it around yourself and is the same camera system you had in Splinter Cell.
Now that's annoying.
Again, glad I got it, great deal...but seriously. They took the second disc out of the set for the collection, yet when I boot this up, it says "disc 1"?
crazy. One day I'd like to get to Disc 2...but not with this one. :)
I'm glad it's subsistence, tho. I rented Snake Eater, and without the radar, it was annoying, and I always wanted a behind-the-back.

If all it says is "Metal Gear Solid 3" on the side, chances are it's from the MGS Essentials package. It's also a white case, as opposed to the somewhat orange and black of the original Snake Eater or the darker green case of Subsistence.
As has been said, it's disc 1 of what comprises Subsistence. If I recall correctly, it did contain the Snake vs Ape mini-game (if not, then I must have imagined playing it o_o). I don't believe you have to change any settings to use the new camera, simply rotate your right analog stick for an all-around view. To me, the new camera makes Snake Eater itself almost unplayable.
I really like the new camera, though there's one problem with it: no compass. I was stuck in a log, awaiting evasion dropping, and suddenly realized I didn't know which way I entered the log from. I had to get out and stand up before I realized, and ended up going the wrong way.
I did find, though, clicking R3 swaps back and forth! So I can click into whatever's best.
Good for when you're at a wall and need to see over it, click into "overhead" mode and pan over, then click back when you need a long-distance snipe or when you can't see, but the enemy can due to camera angles.
I look forward to getting Disc 2 one day, but am OK just playing the game now.
BTW: Did anyone ever own "the Document of MGS2"? I heard it was a bunch of special features...that's it. It seemed interesting, but I wasn't gonna pay a game price for something to watch.....as much as you sit and watch these games anyways. ;)
BTW: unless you unlock it, Snake Vs. Ape is not on this disc.
Just an added irritation....I guess collectors would have more luck here than at Gamestop....went in to talk to someone about the whole "disc 2" thing, and the store manager there said it's policy on a used game to only keep what's needed. Literally told me that since Disc 2 was a bonus disc, every copy used I'd find in store would just be Disc 1, even if it was the 2 disc set to start with! That the "home office" sends out copies of games, and if there's anything bonus....like they said a limited Halo ODST had a bonus disc, but it was unnecessary for the game to actually work....that they wouldn't have it.
No understanding as to why it's a store policy, but it really kills collector's sets...

That's the only thing that scares me about buying at Gamestop.
...
Well, not the only thing, but one of the major things. It's weird though, because the Gamestop in my area had some .hack games and they had their Anime DVD in them.
Subs is one of my fav PS2 games, really changed my opinion on MGS series. I loved MGS, HATED MGS2 MGS3 SUbs got me back in love.

Don't do that just list it as disk only on snake eater and send the disk only or you could send the whole thing.
Well, now a stellar Gamestop employee has found Subsistence Disk 2 for me and handed it over free of charge. So now, would I list it as "disk only subsistence"? Box art just says "mgs3", disk 1 just says "mgs3" but has subsistence data on it, and I did scrounge up a disk 2....just not retail packaging.
Of course, I need to PLAY it first... :)

Gamestop doesn't really care about anything that is considered a "bonus disc". If its in there, so be it, if not, still full price for the used game. Kinda like disc only here, as long as you have all the discs required to actually play the game, its all that matters. That's why you should always ask before you pay them.
