The options are:
1. Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! -- Appears to be a single match version of Punch-Out, that allows you to take on Doc in the ring. Download this stand-alone, non-transferrable, minigame to your Wii using the code provided and punch away.
2. Mario hat -- Images show surprisingly high quality for this hat, but what are you really going to do with a "true-to-life replica" of a Mario hat anyway? At least it has potential resale value.
I'm a bit torn. Although I usually prefer tangible stuff to virtual goods, the minigame would probably get more use at home than the hat - especially since I didn't end up buying Punch-Out!!
What are other people picking? Why?
I'd pick the hat.
But I own the original Punch-Out on VC and NES.
I went with the hat. I decided I'd rather have something that has some resale value.
We went with the hat as well for the same reason as kevlar.
I only made it to gold status, so I only got the dinky calendar. :(
I went for the download. I would have been more wholeheartedly pumped if it was a disc. I know downloads are cool and all, but I like tangible, tradeable things.
However, the hat....I don't see anything but resale value. Why would I wear it, and the second I do, it's "used"...and it's not the kind of thing I put on my shelf. It'd be for my kid to wear, at best. Or in a box till resale.
And if the "Doc Louis" that is downloaded is truly that awesome, it'd get a higher value if I ever sold my Wii, anyways.
I want Punch-Out, don't have the green right now, so it's a welcome addition to my gaming library.
Don't know why I have to wait until potentially November for the download code, though...
I'll get the hat
Hmmm... I'm pretty torn too. I reached platinum this year as well, my first year ever even trying. On one hand, i've never owned a punch out game before (only played one like twice), so this would be a great trial. But on the other hand, I could get something that down the road could have good resale value.
How much do you guys think the hat will sell for?

Links to an eBay auction that ended with a $40 buy-it-now price. Has some close-up photos of the hat too!
Note: Changed the link because I didn't know the old one had an intermediate page for advertising. Sorry about that, hopefully this one is better.
I picked the download. I get too many free calenders every year and the hat didn't do anything for me.
I thought at least I should be able to give the code to someone else to punch into their Wii to download themselves. Do you guys think it might be tradeable like other wiiware games here? If not, I'll just download it myself, even though I am not a big Punchout fan.

Some people are speculating that it might be tired to your Wii console number, but I don't really believe that. Nobody will know for sure until the codes are sent out... but I'm pretty sure that once someone does download the game then the code won't be useful for anything afterwards.

It won't be worth anywhere close to that when everyone puts theirs on ebay. Its such a small niche market of people who would actually buy it, versus the large amount of platinum members that are going to try and sell it that it couldn't possibly hold that value.

Hmm... I agree that it won't hold at that price, but in a couple of years the hat might be worth some scratch if you don't open it (especially if it stays fairly exclusive). Even if the second hand value is much lower, it should still be better than profit margin on the non-tradable Punch-Out!! mini-game.
That said, I personally think the Punch-Out!! mini-game would be more fun to actually use.
So noone else would actually get the hat to wear it? My friend was Mario for a costume party we had back around hall-o-ween and he had the blue suspenders and everything. If he had this hat his outfit would have been a perfect match.
Cat in the walllll

One punchout match would get old rather quickly
