I can't verify the full validity of this article but here

Apparently Sony plans to offer a way to rip your UMD games to a digital copy, if this is true AWESOME! If it does go through, I would suspect some separate software/hardware might be required though, don't really expect them to do so for free. But for Goozers (idk plural for people in our community =p) that could mean your UMDs aren't completely useless as long as you haven't already ripped it
I likely wont get one because I have a psp phat and I barely use it. And by barely i mean literaly like once a month.
I use my psp ALL THE TIME!
Mostly for videos and music but still
It can't be that hard to connect the PSP to the PS3 and have it detect that a UMD is in the drive. Of course, the hard part will be preventing people from getting free copies of games via shadier adaptations of the technology.

If you really believe that this is a 'good will' program aimed at doing well by customers ... then you are the sort of customer Sony wants!
Sort of like how they touted backwards compatibility on PS3 then pulled it as soon as possible to save costs. They got all of the benefit at minimized cost ... it was a structured 'write off' during the 'loss leader' phase of the console life.
Same here - they will likely target a few games like God of War and Crisis Core and make those available using this system - which will likely have you reading a UMD over network connection and getting access to the digital copy which is probably tied to a serial number or something. They are very conscious of piracy already and don't want to give away a single copy for free.
