I was huge into comics 2001-2007.  Then I stopped (marriage, work, impending fatherhood, new interests).  Last night for whatever reason I decided to read The Walking Dead again.  I read the first 24 issues and was reminded of why I loved the artform so much.  I just wanted to ask some other geeks what there favorite comics are and if there has been anything amazing that has come out in my 2 year absense.

My favorites are:

The Walking Dead

Top Ten

Runaways

Y: The Last Man

Watchmen

Blankets

Jimmy Corrigan

The Goon

I always loved the Far Side, and then was into Dilbert for quite a while.  Not much now.

I'm pretty heavily into comics. I second Watchmen, Y: The Last Man, and Runaways (through Joss Whedon... now it kind of sucks).

Here are a few of my other favorites:

  • Fables (amazing, also its spin-off, Jack of Fables)
  • Exterminators
  • Loveless / Jonah Hex (if you like westerns)
  • League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
  • Sandman
  • Kick Ass
  • Incognito

I know I'm missing a lot, those were just at the top of my mind. If you like shuperhero/cape comics, theres a lot I would also recommend. The ones listed above aren't so much Superman/Batman.

Edit: Thought of more

  • Hellboy
  • BPRD
  • 100 Bullets
  • Scalped
  • DMZ
  • Strange Adventures of HP Lovecraft

Highest recommended are bolded, maybe to give you a place to start looking thats more reasonable. Smile

And it seems if one of your favorites is Walking Dead, then you like horror - so Hellboy/BPRD would be good, as would any Cthulu books, also HP Lovecraft.

I loved Sandman, LOEG, and Hellboy.  I tried the first few trades of Fables and the Exterminators and never got into them.  I'll need to try Kick Ass and 100 Bullets though.  Thanks!  I love hardcovers, so I may wait until they eventually release 100Bullets in that form.

Not a big comic fan myself, but I have read a fair bit of manga.  Some titles that stood out for me were AKIRA, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and of course Berserk.

Really enjoyed

Sandman Mystery Theater.  This is the only comic I own every issue of.  That was one of the best eBay purchases I ever made.  Big old stack of comics that makes me swell with pride.

All the old EC stuff gets a huge thumbs up from me.  Except the romance comics.

Rare Bit Fiends.  It's a illustrated dream journal.  Also liked his Army@Love thing.

Lucifer is great.

Crecy will stay with me 'til my dyin'.

Really love Fear Agent & Godland.

Batman Legends of the Dark Knight rules.

Brubaker's Captain America.  If you're like me and thought that Captain America was just kind of a lame-ass they kept around to maintain the trademark like Wonder Woman, this series changed my opinion.  Brubaker's Catwoman rules your balls as well.

Nightly News is great, until you finish it and want a second series.

Irredeemable Ant Man.  Great until it ends.

I really liked that first Exiles series.  I'm a big fan of What If? too.

Every ounce of the "good" Punisher.  Which really just cuts out the lean years from the middle 90s.  As a guy who likes to draw, the Armory issues are just fantastic.

That whole Alan Moore run on Supreme.  I mean, come on.  That stuff is so good.  It really dips into a sense of wonderment that just doesn't happen too often.  Especially since I have never encountered a worthwhile Superman story.

Aquaman Sword of Atlantis.  This is like my dream comic.  I can't believe it actually exists.

I really liked that Adam Strange Planet Heist thing.   Great self contained story that  doesn't require an encyclopedic knowledge of who is who.  That Green Arrow year one bood that Diggle also did rules your world.

Of course Preacher is better than any movie I've ever seen.  Hitman ruled as well.

I wish I had a ton of money so I could get the rest of those Complete Crumb books.

Lone Wolf & Cub will consume your life.

I've read plenty more and I'd recommend more things to someone else, but these comics I mentioned hold a special place for me personally.

I'm a huge fan of Get Fuzzy.  I'm also convinced that my cat is the female version of Bucky Katt.  When I was younger I used to read a lot of Calvin & Hobbes.

I used to read a lot of comics.  Been over ten years since I basically stopped, though.  I used to love Wolverine, Batman, Lobo, and Gambit from the major publishers.  JTHM and I Feel Sick were great books.

Anymore, I only read the few books that my buddy loans me.  Out of those, Kick Ass is alright, but I think my favorite is The Boys.  Takes a vantage of super heroes being power hungry celebrities, and follows a group of 'norms' who are charged with keeping them in line, what ever method it takes.  Blackmail, extortion, the occasional beat down, what ever is needed.  The story's top notch, and the main character is modeled after the dude in Shawn of the Dead, so it's win/win.

Hexpane - you seem like a big Grant Morrison fan. He is awesome.

Have you read Seven Soldiers of Victory? I just ordered some more of its TPB.  Also, his new Batman & Robin is the best Batman has been in years.

I used to buy A LOT of comics but now only pick up the occasional trade. I would highly recommend:

Midnight Nation and Rising Stars by J. Michael Straczynski

the entire James Robinson run of Starman

Mad Love by Paul Dini

Inhumans by Paul Jenkins
