Hello, I just started getting back into graphic novels and picked up Infinite Crisis and Identity Crisis and was wondering if someone would be so cool (and smart) as to fill me in on the books (graphic novels plz, they are soooo much easier to track then normal comics) that I am missing.  I am basically looking to just understand the whole story (I know i'm missing Crisis on Infinite Earths but that's about it) but even any side books to grab to kind of tie it together.  I never read either so I don't even know if they are connected but I did a wiki search and they seem to be.  So any info on books I should pick up to complete or even expand on the story line (I am not going to read them until I have enough of the books for it to make sense) it would be very much appreciated.  And if someone could put them in the order I should read them, it would be even more appreciated.  I got a lot of great read ideas from past threads for graphic novels worth reading (thanks to you guys) but I can't find out a clear cut answer anywhere on the Crisis books.  Thanks  in advance and if this was already a thread (I searched but couldn't find it in a previous thread) then the link to that would be just as helpful.

Do I (or someone you know) use (I don't) too many (too less?) brackets when typing [or anti-typing (think: whiteout)]?

That isn't what hes asking.

But in answer to your question OP, I'm not 100% sure on the Crisis series. All I know is the following:

  • The first was Crisis on Infinite Earths, and Infinite Crisis is a sequel to that.
  • Chronologically, then it heads to the 52 series... I think. But I'm pretty sure you could read the Crisis Aftermath books before 52 (The Battle for Bulwhatever, and The Spectre)
  • After 52 comes One Year Later
  • Countdown to Final Crisis is chronologically after 52, takes place during One Year Later, and then that series led into the Final Crisis series

So, in conclusion, its a big old clusterf**k. Its pretty much a mega-series, and I think if you read Infinite Earths then Infinite Crisis you can pretty much go anywhere from there.

V for Vendetta is definitely on my (long) list of gets, probably get it right after Crisis on Infinite Earths. Thanks for pointing it out as a great read Admiral Axtall.

Decrypded:  Thanks so much, it really is confusing but your post made more sense then all the Google searches I've done.  I appreciate it.

I hate to nag and ask for too much but I'm now wondering about Identity Crisis.  I flipped through it and bought it because of the art and somewhat because it had "Crisis" in the title.  It would be cool if it was a one shot or even a whole different story arch then the other "Crisis" books.  Just would like to know if it pertains at all to Infinite Crisis or to any other stories.  Thanks again in advance.

I'm not really sure as I haven't read any of it besides 52.

One of the best places to look for answers would be the Penny Arcade forums (the comics section). The users there are knowledgeable and friendly, unlike a lot of comic forums filled with elitists.

I read the crisis and 52 series out of order.  It really doesn't matter as all of it is a bunch of malarchy when it comes to being cannon etc..

Originally DC had a mandate to reduce alternate worlds/origins etc.. so they did that in the first one.  Then later, new writers said "EFF THAT!" and made up their own rules.

Much is made about "shocking deaths" and such but in the end the DC universe really hasnt changed that much other than they finally outgrew the Kyle Rayner being the "qewl d00d JALer" and Aquaman being "hardc0re bker metal d00d!"

I actually use WIKI and Amazon to help me figure out what I should read in which order, Amazon has a cool product linking that is fairly consistent for graphic novels.
