Some cool new announcements:

- New Macbook Air

- Massive updates to Macbook ... should help many here!

- Macbook Pro is wonderful - features *both* high-speed integrated graphics (nVidia 9400M supposedly 5x faster than Intel GMA 950), and a top-end 9600 GT M w/ 256 or 512MB of vram.

Was hoping for a 10" 'netbook' for ~$750 ... but alas ...

Interesting things:

- Apple now boasts ~17% of unit sales market share, in the last year, and ~33% dollar - in other words, in the last year 1 out of 3 computer buying dollars was spent on a Mac.

- The new Mac allows you to switch between the integrated and discrete graphics to choose between battery life and performance.

- The high-end new MBP's basically take the place of needing a PC - I am running WinXP on my current Mac and it basically matches performance with my $4000 Dell ... for everything but extreme graphics.

when was both of these purchased? because i can honestly say i can best my $750 dell desktop with win xp pro by having a $450 acer laptop with ubuntu, because i purchased the laptop a year ago and the desktop 2 and 1/4 of a year ago.

Give me some credit ... I have owned well over a dozen Dell laptops, a dozen or so Macs, a bunch of Compaqs, Toshibas, a few IBM's and several HP's through the years.

The Dell is a XPS M1730 from early spring and the Apple is the current top-line Macbook Pro.  ~$4000 vs. $2500.  Both are *awesome* ... I don't want to take away from the Dell, just that the quality of the Apple is superb and the performance is excellent.  If I want to max out Crysis I use the Dell, but for the other 99.5% of my life ...

actually you can bash dell because i personally hate them, i like HP, Toshiba, and Gateway (which i think is the best out of all of them unless you make it yourself).

They sound great, but my recent laptop meltdown has made me hesitant to drop that kind of cash again, and this is coming from a lifelong apple worshipper. Quality be damned, I'm just a lot more comfortable these days with a $300 netbook for tooling around than a $2600 beast I need to keep on a pedestal. I know my fears are irrational, but damnit, I had the lemon of all lemons.

I miss my backlit keys, working trackpad, and auto-adjusting brightness :(

Yes, these laptops from almost a year ago do sound great. I can't wait until they're available for purchase. I'm going to camp outside the Apple store and be first in line :D

This is a Mac aquarium, if you wanted something fully functional out of the box you'll have to get something else.
