While at PAX, I got to meet Andrew Bub, aka Gamerdad.   He was an early supporter of Goozex and often writes about effective ways to be a gamer parent.  He got me thinking about all our gamer dads that we have here.  Though our demographic spread is wide, I noticed we have a quite a few Gamer Parents on the forums.  I have no experience in this area, but I wanted to get a little bit more info from everyone about your gaming habits.  Because time is something nobody really has a lot.

Make sure to visit Gamerdad for a great stuff on the subject.  Also, Goozex member and Destructoid editor did a nice interview on this with TXA1265, linked here.  Here is my quick poll question:

As a Goozex Gamer Parent, what is your top priority?

  • Finding time to play alone (20%)
  • Finding time to play with the family (20%)
  • Monitoring the time your kids spend playing games (0%)
  • Monitoring the types of games your kids play (30%)
  • I didn't know I had gaming priorities... (0%)
  • Other... (30%)
  • Total Votes: 10

That's kind of a tough poll because several of the issues listed there are priorities. Being a responsible gamer parent is a constant job.

Between monitoring which games the kids are playing, how long they're playing, making sure we're doing enough family activities as opposed to isolating ourselves, and finding enough alone time to play the games that might not be safe for younger eyes and ears... it often takes more discipline and organization than I posess.

I really respect gamer parents like txa who seem to have perfected their family's system.

The gamecube is for my girls and they usually burn themselve out about 1hr at the most before they go off to do something else. They're pretty young so I don't have to worry about what they play yet. I tend to play more after bedtime that way I can get some uninterrupted gaming in. I think I'm pretty lucky to have a very supportive wife with my obsessive gaming hobby.

I guess that I am a gamerdad, but my little poop is only 14 months old.  She can't really game yet, but she does have an ungodly obsession with the 360 wireless controller.  She can sit there and hold it forever.  She simply loves it.  The 360 controller is one of the all-time great controllers, so maybe this is a sign of things to come from her as a gamer.

It will be no time at all before you're fighting her for time on the 360. And you will lose because girls have that effect on their dads.

I had to put other ... because I work around my own gaming time, and also time for my kids to play happens or not - but generally not as much as they would like! I am very active in what they get to play,  but they also get a lot of 'hand me downs' from my (yes, I give them games I could trade away here!).  But time when all four of us play together is rare enough that it is a 'drop everything' moment.
