Oblivion is simply a better game if you pretend it's linear.
Do the black brotherhood or Knights of the Nine quests from start to finish. Unlike FO3, there really is no reason to wander in Oblivion. Wandering around in FO3 is fun, you discover hidden jokes and bobbleheads and level up at a reasonable pace.
Since leveling in Oblivion can actually make you weaker, it's better to follow quests. Then again you want to make sure the quest reward is not a leveled item, if it is a leveled item, get to level 25 ASAP then do the quests.
Also note the main quest in Oblivion is a grind fest chore of nonsense. Don't even bother doing it til you did all the side quests w/ the good rewards like Knights o9 etc...
catparty:Fallout 3 definitely refined some things from Oblivion, and did other things differently, so I can imagine that after playing Fallout 3 first, Oblivion might seem aimless in comparison.
Specifically Perks, Special, and Leveling up are all handled much better in FO3. After replaying FO3 again on the PS3, I'm reminded by how important these "mechanical trappings" of RPGs that "get in the way of visceral combat and big moments" and are "relics of the days of table top" are actually critical in making a good game vs. a bad game.
I know BioWare vehemently disagrees that RPG sytems are needed for good RPGs, but FO3 IMO is a shining example, especially compared to Oblivion. Making a satisfying, and logical leveling system really makes that carrot on the stick that much more appealing.
Even w/ FO3's buggy and unbalanced perks/special/combat it's still more understandable and rewards the player for advancing.
Oblivion never is really clear on if you are being rewarded or punished. So people end up farming leveld bandits for Glass Armor.... like a single player MMO
Looking back on Oblivion's rewards, half of the quest rewards are crap gear that is too heavy to use or outdated by the time you get it.
The Arena quest is a great example, you spend time on this cool quest in the Arena doing a Spartacus type deal and your epic reward? Mediocre heavy armor that is so heavy you will never use it. What a downer.
It's one of the most overrated games of all time. Don't feel bad for not liking it.
For those wondering why they loved FO3 more than Oblivion, that's because it's a superior game. Better atmosphere, no stupid level and loot scaling, less aimless quest structure. If they make as big of an improvement in TES5 from FO3 as they did from Oblivion to FO3, it will be a genuinely great game.
I loved Oblivion! It was my first game for the Xbox 360, and I've put so many hours into it.....it's kinda sad actually. I do agree that it's not perfect though. They need to work on some of the gameplay, and really improve the level system, and add some RPG elements, but I have a lot of hope. Maybe we'll hear something new about Elder Scrolls V soon. I enjoyed Oblivion's lush and full atmosphere more than Fallout 3's though. Maybe because everything is still alive.
The last quest of the Thieve's Guild will always be my favotite part of the game.
chris100185: What specifically don't you like. Assuming you have the PC version you can mod it to your heart's content.

I have the PS3 version. It's not hat I don't like it, I just get bored when playing. F3 had me captivated in the first hour of play, but Oblivion is just boring to me.
insertmedia.aspx?AppType=Unknown&ProfileSaved=trueI can imagine a world where there are no guns, no wars, and no violence. Then I can see us taking over that world, because they would never see it coming.

I don't feel bad about it, I just didn't want to throw it in the corner and forget it if I'm missing something. From what I have read and experienced, it's just not for me. FO3 rocked, and I pre-ordered New Vegas a month ago, so I guess I'll have to wait. Thanks for all the input.
Don't waste your time. I trudged through the main quest out of some perverse sense of obligation or misplaced hope that it would get better.... and it didn't.
Not one bit. Ending was a huge junk-slap in the face that you are a passive observer in, the oblivion gates are carbon-copies of one another and the big ending battle was a joke.
Do the side-quests until the game has lost its flavor, and it's become evident there are three different dungeon sets, and then shelf it. Don't make the same mistake I did, and don't believe the hype.
I think the reason I like Oblivion more than Fall Out 3 is that Oblivion had a better vibe to it. The things that keeps FO3 back is:
1) V.A.T.S is way too simple, why take the shooting out of a FPS. Even though I dont like it I'm always seeming to fall back on it.
2) Shades of gray and brown get really, reeaallyy old fast. and thats all your looking at nearly the entire game with the exception of mothership zeta that just repeates the same textures over and over again as is.
3) I always play these games as stealth classes and Oblivions was quite a bit more exciting with the bows and arrows instead of just VATS'ing everybody in the face.
4) In Oblivion you have the choice of using Bows, a list of magic spells including summons, and a multitude of weapons. But in FO3 all you get is guns and melee and im always left with the feeling of being stuck with a been there done that tactic.
Not to say Oblivion didnt have its downsides (IE Oblivion Gates for one ex) or that FO3 is a bad game by any means. I just found myself more drawn into the gameplay and vibe of a sprawling countryside riddled with dungeons and towns than the bland post-apocalypse that FO3 brings.
Thats my two cents, after writing this I feeling like I need Oblivion in my request que
Talk about a game that is exactly opinion based.
My experiences:
You go through the stupid jail break scene, through crappy caves and stupid troll things.. and Rats. And... OMG! Look at this world! It's amazing! I want to see it all! It's huge. WHhhhhhhhhhhaaaa? Is that a town on that ridge, almost 10 miles away. I can barely see it! What? An encampment! Awesome! Bandits! Uh oh! CRAP THEY SAW ME! Hmm.. Why are villagers attacking me? (friend:Dude, you just stole that horse didn't you? Um.. Yeah... Well, now your a thief and people hate you. Word gets around.) A quest? A dungeon? No, I don't think so. No I don't care about your daughter. Boo Hoo. Or instead. Sure, I'll save your daughter. Good ending. Sure I'll save your daughter. *waits until nightfall* *drinks their blood in their sleep. You can become the #1 arena fighter. Or the best theif ever. Or join the assassins Oh, OR, and I never tried it, but I think it's possible... The king gives you his pendant or whatever. I always wanted to sell it and pretty much say, hah. Storyline? That's rich.
Okay, rant aside. I really enjoyed the openness. For a long time there was no, "Go to x, to do y". It was more about. Gir>Whazzat?! I wanna be a mongoose! I mean, you just want to see the world. You see the sky at night and think, wow. You see the trees and plantlife and animals and think, that is nice. The secrets are really cool. The bugs are almost just as cool as the content. Giant mushrooms out in the wilderness or beserker drunks. Or after becoming arena champion, the idiot fanboy who follows you around. He basically screams "Kill me!"....Creatively. This is a true adventure game. You can ignore the story all you want, but you can see the hints around you that it'd eb a good idea to stop the evil. I bought a haunted house.... For some reason. Yes, awesome.
Or you could save the world through the storyline. Hillariously though, I never did this. Even after 100's...500? hours into the game.
/Also, strangely enough. I really enjoyed alchemy. So I would explore the countryside to find herbs to make cool potions. I know it's strange, but a lot of people love the small stuff. Some people actually love the idea of hunting in the game or evading arrest.

I was a mage ( i always am in RPG type games like this) and I pretty much did the same. Roamed the country side making potions for 200 hours and then never played again. Well actually I did buy the GOTY edition for my computer but my netbook is slow and I don't use it much.
Gary Johnson For President 2012!
If you have the PS3 GOTY edition be careful. I put in 80 hours before the vampire incident. Apparently there is a glitch on the GOTY edition for PS3 where you cannot undo this after it happens (used the online walkthrough and found out after the quest that it doesn't work on PS3 GOTY). I guess if you rent the original game you can beat this quest and then uninstall and continue but that seemed like a pain in the ass and i just gave up the game. I love both this game and FO 3 and once I get a better gaming computer I will likely come back to this title. I didn't feel like the game picks up pace at all though. If you are uninterested in the beginning you probably won't gain much interest as the game doesn't change much.
It get better if you have the expansion, Shivering Isles, as for the main game I think it gets worse. I really enjoyed it at the beginning, but at the end I almost quit.
Funny thing, those Oblivion Gates. I would just run through the levels and not really worry about killing the guys and grab the stone at the end! Once I realized that (of course I was leveled up pretty high by then), things were much easier (and faster) on me!
I loved it but it really isnt as "linear" as Fallout 3. I "played" Oblivion for almost 4 years...
You can literally get lost in the faction quests and not get back to the main quest for a really, really long time. I only completed three of the faction quests and the main quest. I thought the game was really cool and a lot different from anything I had ever played.
