Mostly hard, but sometimes normal.  Boy, what would Craig Ferguson do with that sentence. Big Smile

When I was a kid I beat Devil May Cry so many times over, I actually completed Dante Must Die mode. You try that mode today, and see how long you last against those shadow wolves.  Somehow I got through all that back then, but now I just don't have the patience.

It's a combination of wanting to play more games (and now having the means to buy more than 2-3 games per year), and also not having the time in the day to retry over and over and over.

I set the default on the Xbox to Hard. Unlockable difficulties are annoying since I rarely want to play through a game twice (looking at you, Dead Space).

Normal. I only play on hard if I really like the game enough to try a second playthrough. I only play easy if the game is not fun enough to be worth putting up with any difficulty.

Most games on Normal. Fighting games one setting below normal (usually they have 7 settings, so I play a shade easier than normal, not like a full setting like other games have... like if normal is 4, I like to play on a 3).

If its a game with Multiplayer I usually play the hardest settings or if there are trophies for the hardest difficulty. Otherwise normal/easy is fine with me.

I figure 'Normal' is what the game was balanced for, so I'll play there. If I enjoyed the game enough not to want to get rid of it right away, I'll then go to 'hard'.

My big exception is rhythm games. Generally speaking, skills translate from one to another, so I never play below 'hard' on any music game, and usually I'll bump it up to 'expert' once I get the hang of the nuances.

That said, on rhythm games, it seems like they are actually balanced for hard/expert, but are afraid of scaring off new players if medium is too hard - notice how the fifth (orange) button is rarely used on normal mode for our plastic guitar games?

I start on normal then work my way up through them until I'm bored. So, after call of duty 4 I pretty much said eff it.

With the exception of dmc4

I ALWAYS play them on the easiest difficulty possible. Unless it affects achievements, I always select the easier path.  I noticed years ago I was hating playing games because of the un-ability to clear a level after a few tries (Megaman is the #1 to blame).  I never play for a challenge, life is challenging enough, I want just fun while playing.

^ This.   I have challenges in my life--learning new languages, learning new skills, making it through the day without beating stupid people senseless.  I don't need to add difficulty to my life during my recreation.

These days, unless I read about a game being crazy hard, I tend to set it on the hardest/second to hardest difficulty. It's a nice challenge and I find that if I start on that difficulty, it's "normal" to me.

Not to pull an old man move, but even a lot of the "hard" games of today kind of hold your hand through the process, not like the crazy difficult games from bygone eras. Games that companies made for KIDS to play, the sadists!

I tend to play on the hardest as a matter of pride, that I CAN beat that difficulty.  Problem is, once in a while I can't...and that drives me mad.  Some games treat increased difficulty different that others too, which can be a pro or con.

Crysis on Delta (hardest) was a great example of a super difficulty setting.  The enemies got more resilient and seemed to work a bit better together (not uncommon for a higher setting), but the neatest thing about it was that they no longer had enlish dialogue, but rather all spoke their native Korean.  I had no idea what they were doing anymore as they yelled.  Not only did this add to the atmosphere of the game, but it did make it a bit more difficult when I didn't hear a grenade warning.

In contrast, there are other titles that just give enemies laser like accuracy and one hit kills to drive you crazy.  Headshot while running alongside a bunch of pillars or some such.  Great accuracy OR one hit kills is fine by me, but add both and it can be downright mindnumbing.

Lately, I've been trying to steer away from playing hardest all the time, partially because it's a self inflicted pain, and partially because it just extends how long it takes me to get through my ever growing backlog.  I'll NEVER pick easy, as that's generally just being hand held through the title, but if achievements/trophies don't need a difficulty setting beat, I'm beginning to select Normal as a result.

i usually play on normal because if feel that's what the developers intend you to expierence. if the game is good enough i go harder on the next play through.
