ejamer:While not a true sequel, the DSi clearly has more functionality than a regular DS Lite.
Really? The loss of the GBA slot was a major negative point in my mind. I don't remember it's other additions though. The DS's are quickly all muddling together in my head.

Wait, what? I thought it was incompatible since they removed the little sensor from the front of the console? I have the little white remote that came with the premium launch consoles.
I guess that goes to show I should have tried it first.
Right now there are three models of the DS for sale. DS lite, DSi and DSxl. I look at them as more like three models of the same hand held in the same way that you can buy different models of a car. The DS lite has all the functionality of the original DS doesn't it? Only difference being the hardware was redesigned, so I don't really consider the evolution of the DS to be something akin to say the dropping of BC on the PS3.
I have spent most of my money on women and beer. The rest I just wasted....
The BC ps3's had more USB ports I believe as well.
What about systems with added stuff. The GBA SP got a back light upgrade I think.
Gary Johnson For President 2012!
The original PS3's also had slots for SD, ProDuo and Compact Flash cards, I believe the slims no longer have those but I could be wrong.

Yes, really. DSi has a notable upgrade for online features (including downloadable DSiWare games). It's got more power and memory, although those probably haven't been used in many games. It's also got cameras added and slightly larger screens.
People who don't care about those features have the option to buy a DS Lite instead. Both models are supported and available... so consumers have more choice now instead of having features taken away from them.

Have those cameras been used much yet?

The original PS3 that had all the extra stuff was the 60GB model. It launched in 2006 for $600, with the cheaper 20GB (lacking some features) coming in at $500. You can currently get the 120GB system for $299. Yes it has lost a few features that the early console did have but it's literally half the price of the launch system, more reliable and efficient.

I know I haven't used mine at all beyond testing them to make sure they worked. Not having the GBA slot is a bummer but I like the bigger screens on my XL. It's nice to have the option but to be honest I haven't played a GBA game in at least a year.

I'll still take my hardware based BC 60gb over any of the new ones. As for the price, if you're gonna lose features it better get cheaper, why pay the same for less stuff.

Mine doesn't have that it's an 80GB

Only the 80 GB CECHE models had the memory card reader.

They certainly work. I used mine quite extensively yesterday.
As for the DS (I really should have thought of that one), losing the GBA slot is certainly a downgrade no matter how you try to justify it, because not only does this obviously mean that you can no longer play gba games, but you can't use the rumble pack or even play some DS games at all, like the guitar hero ones. The DSi has some more "features", but yeah, losing the GBA slot certainly counts. Although, as also stated, being as the lite is still on the market, it really is just giving options, same as with the go.
PS3 dropping the number of USB slots or the built-in card reader doesn't really count, because it's still got USB slots available and can read memory cards if you care enough to buy a separate USB reader. No functionality is truly lost.
Kenny007: Have those cameras been used much yet? Not by me. Several games have been released that use the cameras, but I couldn't see the point in upgrading from my DS Lite. It's nice that consumers have the choice though. (I'm also willing to bet that there are more kids out there using the cameras to take pictures of stuff they shouldn't than trying to track down and play used GBA games.) I've never understood why people get so upset about dropping the GBA slot in the third iteration of the DS, or removing GB/GBC compatibility after GBA died out. How long do you really expect dead gaming mediums to be supported for?
