Nothing groundbreaking, but I was definitely excited to see that multiplayer will remain free.  I've always thought Microsoft was loco for choco puffs for only letting Gold members play their games online.  Either that or super evil. 

It should be interesting to see what benefits come from the Plus plan, it mentions discounts (which could be cool) and early access to demos.  I guess we'll find out during our first three months we get for free!  Assuming they extend that to current PS3 owners.

$50 a year isn't going to break the bank, but I would feel like I was wasting money playing single player games, and with a wife and baby I don't think I'd feel like I got my money's worth in a year.

Anyway, what do you think?  Happy?  Disappointed?  Indifferent?

I think they've stated multiple times once this was announced that MP will remain free and its nice to see that confirmed.  However, online play is really the only reason I pay for Gold, so if SONY isn't going to charge for that, there's not much else I think they could add to entice me to pay.

You know, I don't know about that.  I mean, it could be a breakeven/good deal.  A couple of good games might make it worth it.   Also, getting into a beta for a game that I'm drooling over would be a serious incentive.  I'm not ready to discount it as a lost cause. 

Also a couple of really important features will be nice.  The autodownload stuff for demos and such used to be a wonderful thing on the.. xbox360.. that is, unless I'm hallucinating and they never did that... But I vaguely recall enjoying that feature.

It might seem evil for us, but its a huge smart move by them (MS).  Sony wished they could charge users for online, but if the implemented that now, they would definitely have a riot, and I mean an actual riot, probably in front of their offices.  So Sony takes it up the rear quietly and creates Plus to try and get into that.  You might hate the Xbox Live Gold only for the online tactic, but it is cleaver business that brings in tons of bucks for one company.

Did anyone else catch how they said "...until the end of your subscription" when talking about all the free and discounted content you'd be getting?

Sure, getting Wipeout HD for free is nice, especially if those deals are updated monthly, but once your subscription runs out, you lose access to those games.  Not cool.

Or maybe its actually a smart move by Sony not charge. Sony sells many products and brand recognition is everything with a company like theirs. By giving PSN free they've managed to connect more people to their network than MS and get the good will of providing freebies to their consumers. Small things like this mean than that next time you go to any store to buy a tv or other electronic there is a good chance you will see a sony and think positively about their product. MS does well but in a "too big to fail" kind of way.

Wait, I'm confused.

You think MS is evil (they are, but for other reasons) for charging for Gold.

But you think that $50 won't break the bank?  And your exited to see what Sony is offering with their discounts and earlier  access to demos?

Personally, I think that their plan sounds fishy.  Especially what R2k mentioned above about "while the subscription lasts"

Where is the cross game chat support? Paying $50 for some demos and "some discounts"? THAT sounds loco for choco puffs to me. I will take the wait and see attitude with this "service"

I'll continue putting my $50 towards XBL for now. (Although I've never paid $50, past two years I've paid $29.99)

I"d love to see more improvements to the PSN service first before I dole out more cash.

I've never paid $50 for a year of live. Every year I get 13 months for 30-35$. Even if you don't buy the codes on Ebay or somewhere you can still get live cheaper than $50. Sometimes stores have sales on them and sometimes Microsoft advertises renewing for cheaper.

Yeah, so its basically a content rental service. Kind of like Zune Pass, only Zune pass is actually giving you something.

Yep, this is why I will never buy plus. If you joined and ended up with owning the content you were using, you really would get 100s in savings. Basically this is just an expensive rental service. A huge turnoff for a CAG such as myself.
