I was away when Gabe stepped out on stage.  One of my close friends with a PS3 called me and asked if he could "borrow" my Steam account for when this happens.  After reading upon it, I had to break the news:  You gotta pay just like I did!  Still, kind of cool for PS3 owners...and more teammates and opponents for PC and Mac players.

I still remember Mr. Newell cursing Sony and the PlayStation 3 hardware profoundly about three years ago.  I guess we all grow and change over time...or it took that long for them to code Steam onto the most difficult console to program on.

I still think Kevin Butler stole the show.

Steam is an application for PC and mac that lets you organize your desktop shortcuts and have advertisements delivered to you

Steamworks is the framework for the content-management and account system.

Which is to say, there isn't really that much of a difference, one includes the others.

That's a very biased description of Steam.  Here's the "About" page from Steam's website.

LOL I really like Steam for PC gaming. Easy to get older games for a good price and they always stay with your no matter what machine you are one. (sorta)

Not sure why this is creating that much fuss anyway.

Portal is a part of Orange Box which is available on PS3. Portal is also a single player game, unless there is some sort of multiplayer aspect to the second I am unaware of which could easily be handled without Steams network can someone tell me why I am not jumping up and down with excitement at this.

I have spent most of my money on women and beer. The rest I just wasted....

Steam is awesome just for the simple fact that if you put back money for around christmas time, you score massive deals on games, old and new.  I usually spend anywhere from 100 to 200 bucks on christmas time sales through them, getting upwards of 100 games a sale.

Saying they are going to support steamworks is sort of like saying they'd be supporting special background stuff that gives valve more control over how their content is used. Sort of like EA's codes do via xbox live, they allow ea to deliver content to those specific people, Dice is doing this with their VIP pack thing, Bioware has the cerberus network, all the publishers want to have their own little proprietary thing so that when you pop in a game if you are also connected to their background tools they you get ....what they decide to give you. (this could be nothing)

DICE uses this with BFBC2 to add additional maps and such to the game.

Bioware uses this stuff with Mass effect 2 to offer the cerberus network where people who bought the game new and registered can get a few free items of DLC.

It's basically a tool that allows publishers to sell directly to their clients instead of going through a service like Xbox live or PSN where sony and MS take a cut of those profits. (they may still charge a fee and probably do)

These kind of concessions from Live and PSN are likely a way to compete with each other as having a game like portal get lots of free stuff and better "support" on the PS3 would be a way to encourage gamers to buy the ps3 or the ps3 version of portal to save money on dlc or just get more dlc than the competition.

If he'd said that the PS3 was going to get Steam...well that would have been earthshaking news. Steam is basically a games platform, if the PS3 were to get full support for steam you could log into steam, purchase and download games, ( A LOT OF GAMES), and play them from you PS3. Is similar to the little games you can buy on PSN or 360 but steam sells the full games. You could buy MW2 on the PS3 and play it with a mouse and keyboard against PC players. I doubt sony would ever do this although I think they'd be more will than MS would. It would also be no small feat to get all those games running on a ps3. (most probably would not run if steam were available for the ps3 tommorrow)

Support for steamworks doesn't mean much, I'd assume live is working with it to but didn't pay them as much as sony wanted to pay that is why he's supporting the ps3. This will probably end up with gamers getting a few items of DLC or a few more features when the game comes out. My guess is that it's going to be something silly like how batman arkham asylum let you play as the joker on ps3. Or how in soul calibur 4 you could play as darth vader in one version and yoda in the other. Stuff that in no way affects the game, but some might really want those little trinkets.

Thanks Tumbler.

You confirmed my doubts about the magnitude of the announcement. I guess my lack of excitement is founded on the fact there is little to be excited about. Maybe down the line somewhere this grand alliance will yield as yet unmentioned forbidden fruit.

/Also, on Microsoft's E3 presentation... What was with that homeless looking guy?  Honestly, I get it.  Kids like rebels! Unkempt! But you need to draw the line at homeless crack dealer.

And the big Fat guy who's shirt barely covers his whole belly is much better? Who dresses like that at big conference anyway? That sloppy fat guy, I expected to see donut powder near his lips.

Two years ago I would have said the PS3 was on it's way out.  But two years later and after watching Microsoft's E3 showing, I think Microsoft is being shown the door.

lol, Microsoft being shown the door? I'm not a particular FanBoy I have all of the consoles, but I'm pretty sure microsoft will be doing just fine. They will also be stealing away some of those sales from the slim with their new xbox consoles because many whom were thinking of buying a PS3 as well since they already had an xbox and the slim had a great price point will say forget that and sell their current xbox to upgrade with the difference. Non-the-less, since sony did not recoup their loss I think it's a little early to say Microsoft is going to abruptly leave because of a less than stellar E3. By the by Sonys sucked too Nintendo had the best one. Also, talk about bad E3s check out Sony's 2006 E3 Absolutely horrible. The only thing that made this bad for M$ is the fact that it was basically the same demo from last year. M$ is still crushing Sony no matter how you slice it. Oh and Nintendo is crushing them both so stop with the silly comments.

It's ok, you can call yourself a Microsoft fanboy, there's no shame as long as you remember to avoid caps and hold down shift when you're excited.

All of E3 sucked this year. Mostly because it seemed like nothing truly unexpected was announced and there were no big surprises, just updates on stuff from last year. Out of all three though Microsoft's was the worst. And is it just me or did Twisted Metal on PS3 totally get leaked earlier this year and everyone said it was just a mistake or a false rumor? I don't approve of controlling leaks by lying about the legitimacy of the information once the cat's out of the bag. There are better ways to control information. :\

I love Portal, I will buy instantly. There's something to be said about a game that is amusing through and through without resorting to one-liners and smarmy characters.

I really don't think smarmy belongs in that sentence but I suddenly thought of it and I was so excited at the chance to use it that I'm just going to leave the sentence as is. :D

Well, I'm a big Xbox fan, but I don't think it would be fair to declare myself as a fanboy since I've given money to all of the companies PS3 and Wii. I do agree the E3 Expo overall sucked, and I do recall hearing about Twisted Metal for like 2 years now. I also, was pretty surprised with the Donkey Kong Country Wii game, and was very happy with that. It was also cool to see the 3DS in existence and no longer rumored.

I also, don't see the big deal with the Portal 2 and PS3 stuff really it was like okay thats cool, but nothing big.

But seriously does anyone else think that fat guy looked out of place and unprofessional for such a big expo? lol

I wouldn't say ALL of E3 sucked. Just what we got to see, which are the press conferences. The rest of E3 is still ongoing with media covering all the games on the show floors. I unfortunately decided not to go this year, which I am regretting. But at the same time, I don't miss how busy I was last year with trying to see games and writing impressions of them all day for 3 or 4 days straight.

Unless Valve starts supporting consoles in the same manner as they do PC, I wouldn't be terribly excited.  The amount of updates we get on PC make me feel a little guilty when looking at games liek the console version of TF2.

It is still nice to have ONE PC centric company still, but if they're going to put their titles on other platforms, they should at least offer some of the stellar post release content they produce.  Hell, on consoles, they could get away with charging for it.
