I've had it happen to me a couple times. A lot of time they open up beta testing so people can get a feel for a game and love it and then they definitely buy it. Starcraft 2 is a great example, I love the multiplayer on it.
However, Star Trek online didn't have the same effect, neither did earth and beyond when it first came out. (They nerfed my torpedo launchers damnit!)
Ever have it happen to you?
Battlefield Bad Company 2, and Blur. BC2 just did not do anything for me with the MP beta, and Blur was fun for about 20 minutes, then become a chaotic mess of people grinding to the max level at the time, which I think was 10 or 15. I preordered both and ended up canceling and putting the 5 dollars down on other games.
Well, it didn't particularly not make me want to play the game, but it certainly didn't convince me to go out and buy it new. The BETA for Blur was fun for a while, but it got eventually quite boring, especially since I kept losing. I might get this through Goozex one day, but I'm not exactly excited to get it any time soon.
I don't know about beta, but I have been convinced to steer clear of some games because of their demos. I would have gotten Mercs 2 if I didn't play the demo.

Same here. I've had several games where a demo made me steer clear; Dante's Inferno, Dark Void and Just Cause 2 come to mind...
How can someone hate Just Cause 2?
Halo Reach. There, I said it. I'm a HUGE fan of the halo series, but Reach just didn't do anything for me. The new game modes were iffy at best, the new weapons were ridiculously overpowered, and the experience didn't meet my expectations at all.
Metal Gear Online. Tried the beta and the gameplay just didn't do anything for me. Konami making you register a few different account names and passwords just to get into MGO didn't help matters any.
I did try playing MGO later on and pretty much had the same opinion.

I don't hate it. I just don't like it. First time trying the demo was fun, then I realized progressively that for me this game would get old very fast, and I decided not to purchase it.
The original Just Cause on the PS2 makes me wary of the sequel on a next gen system.

You dodged a bullet of frustration by avoiding Dante...read my review

I thought dante's was really good and look forward to a sequal...... lol
To the original question I don't think I've ever played the beta/demo for a game and didn't like it... Sure there are games I've played demos for that I wouldn't ever get but I never intended to get them in the first place. Now I have bought games before that didn't have a demo and they were horrible I wish there had been demos for them so I would have known to steer clear.... Biggest disappointment Prototype.... peice of crap.....
Yup. The Shadowbane beta made me no longer interested in the game, and I had been following it religiously, and in a guild for it, for a couple years, prior to the beta. WOW was another beta that saved me from paying for a game. Lineage 2 I didn't play because of the beta.
Actually, most games I've played betas for, I decided not to actually play the game when it was released.
MAG's beta really turned me off to the game. I know it was improved some, but it still turned me off so much I decided not to get it.
I'm going to put in another vote for Blur. The concept sounds great, but the driving and physics engines totally turned me off from the game.
