So, considering we all know that the great event in 2012 is really going to be a zombie apocalypse, I felt it appropriate to open up a discussion of what your plans are to survive this.  From all indications, the zombies are going to be your run of the mill zombies.  No real brain activity, normal muscle ability - nothing supercharged that can jump 10 feet in the air.  They can stumble, swarm, and run just every other zombie.

Anyways, I'll start first.

The areas I need to improve on.  I need to get in better shape.  I know at some point I'll probably be running for my life, so I need to actually be able to run.  Secondly, I need better guns, and need a lot of mags.  I have two .22 simi-automatics, which I know can kill a zombie if you hit them in the head, but I need some short shotguns with some stopping power for close combat.  I also need a good scope for my .22 rifle, I think that would be really good for picking them off at a distance because my rifle is super accurate.

I have an SUV, it's only 2 wheel drive, but it's still a big vehicle that can haul butt and run over stuff.  I could get my family in there, along with a lot of fuel and some food if I had to.  I know of a really secure location that I have acess too.  It is a huge, unclimable building that is about 30' tall and is made of solid cinderblock.  The doors into it are solid steel doors that could easily be sealed up.  There are windows, but they are about 20' in the air, no chance a zombie could get in through there. Also, there are solid steel roll up doors so I could park the vehicle indoors. It has barb wire fencing and gate around it.  The roof would be a great place for sniping.

It's about 20 minutes from my house, so I'd have to get my family there, secure the area, then hunkerdown and come up with a strategy to get some food. I really don't think ahead much, so I probably won't have huge reserves of food prepared before the event hit us.

Anyways, how are you guys looking when it comes to this upcoming event?

Well, thankfully I come from a gun loving family that has carried over to me, so I have sufficient weaponry at home (short of a shotgun...for now) to arm myself and my wife.  Mostly pistols, from 45 ACP down to the measly .22, but I do have an AR and a few other rifles as well.

With that in mind, I won't have to make the suicidal rush to the gun shop that so many people suggest.  What are these people thinking anyways?  You need guns, so you go to the gun store?  A store which, by law, is often heavily secured?  Not to mention the people within, the ones that sold the guns and are intimately familiar with their care and use?  And you're there to get guns...without one.  Yea, good luck with that.

I also have infantry training on top of my background, so the use of said weapons comes far more naturally to me than many others.  I was rather surprised to see just how many people had never fired, or even handled a gun, when I entered the service.  My wife also has a basic familiarity with firearms, though mainly pistols, and I think that could be built upon.

We have both an SUV (2 wheel) and a 4x4 truck, so I presume we'd be taking my truck.  The only downside to that is there's no real room for more than 4 people in it (uncomfortable for those in the back, but I'm sure they'd deal with it in this situation), so if I were to find other survivors or something, they'd be exposed in the bed of the truck.  The carrying capacity would be nice though.

A downside to my particular situation is that I'm currently living out of state from the rest of my family and friends, so I'd likely try to bridge that gap if possible (3 hr drive).  Others I can trust, who can handle a gun, and are away from the denser populated areas.   I'd rather not have to fight a horde with just one other mildly trained person.

Another concern is whether to hole up or not in one place.  A lot of people suggest doing so, but the stresses of lack of food and water, coupled with the psychological impact of a prolong siege of zombies, could be the end of even the toughest individual.  Personally, I think I'd go along the lines of Zombieland; pick up a few close, like-minded friends, and stay on the move.  We'd be harder to pin down, always able to look for resources, and heck, I'd get to finally tour the country.

I guess that about sums it up.  The only thing I'd of wished I'd done were this to happen right now is to have purchased more ammo (having guns is nice, but without bullets...) and stockpiled at least a little more non-perishable food items.

Excellent thread.  Should it come that I survive I will have the following pros & cons:

Pros:

  • I can help gather wood
  • I can be a picky eater, so I won't snarf everyone's meals
  • I may not run quick, but I can go the long haul
  • I can read maps
  • I don't lose things (think about it...you don't need to hang with someone that always loses their keys)
  • I like to think I have good intuition about who among us are robots...just in case it's a perfect storm of zombies and terminators
  • I know how to sail should we make it to the shore
  • If the undead are somewhat intelligent I feel like I could possibly negotiate our way out of a particularly hairy situation
  • I can climb trees

Cons:

  • I'm a heavy sleeper
  • Need more gun training...but I can learn quick - promise
  • I really don't have a good canned food collection.  Mostly refried beans and that doesn't help anybody!
  • I don't know how to fly should we find a plane
  • I fear sharks more than zombies so don't expect me to travel the ocean on a small vessel

So if you feel I'm a good fit and can overlook my cons then we can maybe form a coalition before 2012 and agree to meet in Florida or something.

My plan is simple ........... Get a giant bag of combos and sit on my front porch and watch as the zombies eat the old guy across the street. That would be excellent. He just sits in his garage and stares at all day every day.It will slow the zombies down a bit while I get my weapons ready.

Maybe I would just get in my car and drive to a less zombie infested area if the horde is too big for myself or just run them all down in the near vicinity if there arent too many and get back to eating my combos.

Always have a few bags of combos ready in case of a deadly zombie outbreak

I plan on getting some blunt objects to carry with me and hiding out in either a cemetary or form a tree top society. Im a light sleeper so I'm not worried about sneaking up on me, and hopefully these are slow zombies so my body shape won't hold me back too bad. But I should definately work out.

Interesting points Kenny, perhaps if you ever wind up in Idaho during the apocolypse look me up.  I'm leaning towards the hole up in a fortress mentality myself.  I have 3 little kids, and when it hits the oldest will be about 5.  Travelling wouldn't be a good idea.

I understand that we're all probably a little unprepared right now for the zombie apocolypse, but all my intel indicates it's not going to happen until 2012.  That's why it's important for us to discuss it now and bouce ideas off each other on how to survive.

Blackcoyote, don't worry, it's only zombies.  No robots, I promise.  And no chance of negotiation, they're stupid, they want to eat you, and yes they can run.  Long distance slow running isn't good enough, you need to be fast.

Larpi, I think the combos idea is great.  But at some point you're going to start hauling butt somewhere and get some guns.  Just making a recomendation, we're here to help.

4thHorseman, I know where you're coming from on the being in shape thing.  If we don't shed some pounds there's no way we're going to survive this.  They're going to be able to run.  The only thing we can hope is that some muscle tissue in thier legs will have been eaten by a prior zombie so they can't run too fast.

I have always been botherd by something (am listening to a zombie type book right now).

Zombies in fiction tend to attack because of a hunger for blood/flesh ... Why would they leave enough for them to get back up and walk around?  I would think that they would eat everything... leaving a skeleton...

Well it's the same as to why you don't eat a whole cow or chicken -- your stomach is only so big.  Which leads to an interesting biological question -- do zombies do the #2?  If you put your scientist hat on, then it's not a vulgar juvenile question.

That's simple, the zombie gets full, or the bitten person manages to get away.

I would recomend that if you do get bitten you go ahead and blast yourself in the head with a shotgun, that way you don't become part of the whole problem.  It's the humane thing to do.

From all indications, yes.  They're bodies all function at a very base, rudimentary level.  They grow hair, fingernails, etc.  Just like a dead person can poop an hour after he's dead, so do zombies.

Their basic senses are very dull, they only seek food.  They understand on a very animalistic level that other zombies are thier own "species" so to speak, so they won't eat them.

As far as I'm aware (haven't really been able to test it... yet) the zombies' stomachs are still the same size as when they were alive, so they can only fit so much at a time be fore it bursts.

zombies can get full and they do so frequently and this is the whole aspect that my plan revolves around. They will obviously eat my neighbor first since he is old and slow and outside at all times. That is when I go into attack mode from across the street and take that ornamental samurai sword off of my wall or flee with my combos depending on how the numbers favor me.

If I have to run down a few zombies in my escape then thats fine because Hyundai Accent can take it - its a farm car and used to getting beat up.

That brings up a good point for consideration.  We're all going to be under a great deal of stress during this time.  Larpi has chosen to resort to eating combos and cool sword kills to relieve stress.  For me, it's going to be sniping zombies from the roof, that will be my stress reliever.

On thing to consider, friends, if you resort to comfort food to relieve stress you may wind up fat and unagile.  In other words, eating too much junk food could make you zombie food.
