So I haven't played a lot of rpgs. The only rpg I have played before was Fallout 3.
I wanted to know if you guys have tips on what class/skills should I go with on Borderlands. I will be starting the game this evening.
I like sniping, I don't like running and gunning much. I like one shot one kill. I also like being rich, looting. :)
Any class and skill set is really a viable choice. Certainly, some are better than others, but you can't really go wrong. I played a berserker, which I played mostly like a hunter. My main weapons were revolver, sniper rifle, shotgun, and rocket launcher. I used mostly the skills that upped my health and shields. I used the berserk skill on bosses, and just to heal myself when hurt. It's not how the class was meant to be played, but it worked, and well.
if you plan on playing a sniper then the hunter class is probably the way to go but in reality any class can be a great sniper. I played as a siren and my main weapons of choice were snipers and machine guns.
You still haven't played many RPGs. Borderlands isn't an RPG at all.

It is an RPG, just not a traditional one. It's more akin to Diablo in terms of pacing with a battle system based around shooting rather than hack and slash or turn-based decisions.
As for the OP's question, definitely go hunter. While, as a previous user pointed out truthfully, any class can go sniper, the Hunter's the class with sniper-oriented skills. However, if you're going with a Hunter who snipes, don't play it single-player; you'll curse your brains out.
The Siren's also a good choice though; she's good with elemental attacks, which are VERY useful. Plus, her phasing skill is great.
Personally, I went with the Soldier class since he was the turret which can resupply you with health and ammo if you upgrade it enough.
I went with the Siren and went with just Machine guns and did pretty well. Later in the game as you upgrade your weapon skill you begin to shoot and reload ridiculously quickly and having guns with elemental attacks is always nice.
The hunter is the most obvious choice for you since he is a born sniper and has skills that increase the amount of cash and ammo that he loots after kills. The only problem is that he is a bit weak solo. You really need to play with friends if you are going that rout.
I personally liked the Siren. She's like the mage of the bunch. Instead of spells she has elemental damage on her weapons...anyone can use these same weapons but she has skills that increase the chance to deal elemental damage as well as an increase to the damage dealt by elemental weapons. It got to the point where I didnt care about the weapons base damage, I just wanted high elemental chance accuracy and clip size.
The soldier is more like field support/medic. He can heal the group and provide ammo with his turret. Other than that he's not much use for anything else just because another class would work better for actual fighting.
The berserker works well for some people but seemed to be the most difficult for me. He has the berserk skill but that doesnt make you immune to damage so you die often in big fights. In fact he has skills that make it so that when you do die it takes you longer to bleed out or when you get revived you come back with more health. Its clear that the developers meant for the berserker to die a lot. But he goes down swingin'. His fists are more powerful than most guns in the game once your level is high enough.

Totally. That was my main strategy as a berserker to heal myself, aside from using my berserk skill. I never used a health pack, because all I had to do was get a second wind (which is very easy to do with a rocket launcher with all the explosive skills he gets) and I'd come back with near 80% health and full shield. I dropped all the time. I actually died very little.
At the late levels Hunter's abilities become so awesome it's ridiculous. The bird doesn't do too much for most of the levels since until later in the levels you can only send it to attack one enemy at a time. But in the late levels you can respec your character such that:
Suddenly your bird is a crazy huge asset instead of just a small side weapon every 30 seconds.

Just go with who you like and play them however you like them.
I went Siren because she was just asking for it. I use a sniper rifle has a primary and a shot gun if they happen to get within melee range. Her phase walk ability is really useful and you will almost NEVER die with her because of it. I'm only level 15 (finals week now..) but I'm enjoying the hell out of it.
In the beginning, just pick any skills you like most, or think will help the most. You can redistribute your skills whenever you want for the cost of peanuts.

If you're looking for a good play-through for your first game I'd suggest the Soldier. The Turret Gun is a great ability that helps mow down enemies and with upgrades, shields you, heals you and gives you ammo.
If you are planning to play solo most of it, and planning to buy the last expansion (Secret Armory..), and you want to kill Crawmerax solo, your safest bet is the Siren. Not that it can't be done with others, but she's the easiest to do it with.
She is a run and gun though... You could use a sniping riffle with her, but eventually class bonuses give her SMG damage inscrease (Mercenary).
