daemian2k:the deal with the extra content, it's a publishers way of trying to push digital distribution on us to get rid of physical copies whether we want digital distribution or not, it's going that way.
I hope this never happens. I enjoy my hard copies. The idea of holding it in my hand tells me that I actually own it. If I downloaded it, I'd feel as if I was just paying to play someone's else's copy.
TenTonHammer23: daemian2k: well hate to burst the proverbial bubble their junior but might as well get used to it, the games are only going to get more expensive as time goes on. i remember buying new NES games for 40 and 50 bucks in the 80's and 90's. and the deal with the extra content, it's a publishers way of trying to push digital distribution on us to get rid of physical copies whether we want digital distribution or not, it's going that way. Mortal Kombat 3 for SNES in the USA was 70 bucks retail. I made my mom buy that one for me.

Chrono Trigger launched at the $79.99 price point (and was worth every penny).

LOL that comment makes for some disturbingly hilarious mental images. but back to topic ,yeah if you download a copy you just pay for the licensing for the product and you can't do anything else with it, they are trying to stop the reselling of their so-called I.P. by doing this. also, with the size of some games today they would have to cut the size of them to allow for bandwidth of some connections. it's all a conspiracy for companies to charge more

Companies increasing profits? Conspiracy!
i recently watched a podcast where jason rubin, formerly of naughty dog studios, said that publishers and developers alike should adopt the farmville business model in the near future where users would pay for a basic copy of a game and pay for the add-on content that the user wanted based on the amount of time they play the game.
Outlaw91: Well said deamon2k. I recently took a videogame survey about a new game that's coming out and it asked whether i would be more likely to buy a $60 retail version or a $20 download only version. They try and claim that with the elimination of making cases, burning discs, and printing manuals plus shipping to stores that we the consumer will pay less. But we all know it doesn't work that way. It'd be like that at first to get people to shift to download only consoles and then they'll jack back up the prices. And in that case we'll have even less ability to recoup some of that money becuase we won't be able to trade the games on goozxex or lend them to a friend.

They've already really shown this with the Games on Demand on the 360 (last I checked). They are the same price, if not more, than what you would find in stores. And with them not having to burn discs or print manuals and all of that, I don't see why they are not cheaper.

I would like them to be cheaper too since I'm getting less for my money, but there is no fiscal reason why it should be cheaper. How much would it cost you to go out and purchase a blank DVD at retail then come home and burn a file to it, print up a label and mail it directly to my house using USPS. Probably a total of $5 at most. Now you gotta consider that they buy disks by the millions and ship in bulk etc. Their cost to print and ship a disk probably costs cents. So why would we expect, from the perspective of cost:price that the digital copy would be any cheaper? By that logic the physical copies should only be $10 and they would still be making a ton of profit.

I think a more accurate example would be: Microsoft and their developers have to pay their employees the same amount whether their games come on a DVD, a series of bits over the Internet, or punch cards.
Salaries are a much larger chunk of the cost than physical media is.

Not exactly a more accurate example, but a more direct one. Our points are nearly identical in that I was simply pointing out that the actual printing and shipping is a minor contributor to the overall cost. The implication was that development, advertising, soundtrack licencing etc were actually what determine the cost. However, you could make the argument that the "recoup" costs should also be close to nothing for the older games that they put on demand. By that logic not even the devel costs should be much of a factor. Their only real cost should be advertising and distribution...so once again a $10 game would still yield considerable profit. They charge $29.99 because people will pay $29.99 plain and simple.

Whoa, whoa, whoa... Farmville cost money?? HAHAHAHA people pay for that garbage?????
Here is a good example of DLC gone "bad". Dragon age Origins. Warden's Keep. If you buy the DLC and then buy Awakenings expansion, and import your WK armor, it is bugged and will change the appearance of the new Awakenings uber armor and weapons to be the WK graphics in game.
ROFL still I love Awakenings, but pretty said that by purchasing the DLC it gimped the purchased expansion. And the other DLC is not importable. So basically 50% of the DLC becomes unusable, and the other 50% makes the expansion not as good.
So we paid for content that nerfed our experience. Those who did not get WK get the full experience in the expansion.
How's dem apples?
