Dark Sector had some pretty brutal melee kills.
Kenny007: SuperRick: I know everyone is talking FPS, but my favorite melee is the close combat in Uncharted 2. It's very satisfying to choke someone out, shove them off an edge, or a quick block and punch. My vote should count because it's still a shooter, just not a FPS. That's a good point. There are some solid stealth kills in UC2. I like the pull off the ledge move myself.

Exactly what I was thinking. There are some great ones. I'm quite partial to the slide-through-their-legs-and-elbow-their-groin, or the stealthy both-hands-on-their-chest-and-swing-their-head-into-the-wall.
There are also excellent possibilities on stairs, what with the jump-kicking and the full-on WWE-inspired shoulder toss.
Two thumbs up for Uncharted 2 melee.

N64 GoldenEye karate chop and Halo plasma pistol punch are some of my favorites.
though the drill dash from Bioshock 2 is also very satisfying.
pretty much any TF2 taunt kill as well.
the mw2 riot shield
Golden Eye: SLAPPERS ONLY!
you cannot beat that
Punching in Perfect Dark was pretty entertaining.
For me, it's the knife in bad company 2... The way the camera moves into your enemy and u simply feel the knife rumble into that dude's chest is truely epic.
poisonmancer stab in d2
Brick in Borderlands.
There is nothing better than stabbing someone in CoD4 or MW2
MW2, double knife kill, probally another glitch, but it gave me 2000 xp
Chambered: While chain sawing people is certainly fun, no game has yet mastered Melee mechanics like Day of Defeat did. CS might have, but the original DoD had the most solid melee. I don't like CoD4's melee, nor MW2's. It just don't feel like it works quite as smoothly as DoD managed to do. SHOVEL TO THE FACE! or...rifle butt... ..can't go wrong with a good ol' bayonet, either..

I'd say the opposite (about MW2) in that it's TOO smooth. Effortless to use. Loses all its flair when it's a super fast, no commitment button all its own. BC2 is the same, though as mentioned earlier, I like how the camera moves when it does it, it's still rather effortless, and as it stands (on the PC) currently somewhat broken.
I forgot all about the original DOD. The bayonet was a personal favorite, but I'd love even the rifle butt to have made it into source. While both of these were similar in nature to the above (readily available melee), they had a feel all their own, and a reasonable speed and range to boot.

my vote = suffocating people with plastic bags in Manhunt
You want to see the best melee, do you REALLY?
if so, watch...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGqtw6Ybctk
Pringer X, is that some kind of a sick joke?
