It IS turn-based and thank god for that. It is almost exactly the same system as the ATB system in VIII. Just like the level up system is taken from X. I almost didn't buy it because of the bad hype. Glad I changed my mind. It's not the best or anything, but I'm enjoying it way more than XII.

I don't think it is turn based really, it's not like it's character A's turn then B, then C, then enemy over and over...it's based on the ATB gauge like you mentioned. Turns are irrelevant it's whenever your gauge fills up to the desired ATB slot, (certain actions require more segments) that you can execute your action.

The last response should help.

Just beat it this afternoon with 54 hours on the clock. Now to begin the long post game grind.

So far it's painfully tedious grinding from those chips from soldiers because 1 out of 3 enemy encounters seems to drop a chip for me. I guess it's not meant to be quick and easy. :p

I've used a majority of my resources leveling up weapons.  Finally hit a multiplier of 3, but don't know how I did it :/  I'm not getting many drops of useful materials but that could be due to the area.  I agree that it is nice to see the different styles for each character, but I look forward to them letting me use who I want to use in battle though.

Now that you've got that x3 multiplier, don't level up that weapon anymore until you can afford enough high experience items to max it, or get close.  When a weapon levels you'll lose the multiplier, and they're harder to get the higher level the weapon is.

The level has nothing to do with the multiplier. 36 sturdy bones always gets you a x3 multiplier regardless of the items level.

And I thought the 30hrs I have put in were a lot so far.  I probably would be done now if I didnt go on a 3 day vacation.

Definitely a hybrid between Turn Based and Real Time. Real time in the sense that if you don't do anything you're gonna get knocked out by the enemy as it isn't going to wait for you to choose your commands lol. But turn based in the sense that as long as you keep up, you can really trade "blow for blow." However the ATB is pretty cool because you can also "time" your attacks for certain strategic elements such as a launched enemy, and cast spells while it is in the air instead of timing it wrong and casting spells while it is on the ground, etc.

OH! and I forgot to mention, you can also interrupt or be interrupted during executing a command so you can lose out on that "turn" per se.

wooohooo, finally finished it.  Only to 42hrs.  Man the final boss was hard.  I kept fighting the boss for an hour and kept just dying.  Finally I changed strategies and bam killed him easily.

I assume you're talking about the first form. He casts a spell that causes death, you want to have Cherub's crowns on everyone to help counter it. One thing that makes the fight a breeze. He's vulnerable to deprotect, deshell, and poison. I had him down to 50% before the end of the first stagger

I didnt want to go back and buy cherub's crowns so I switched my party to lightning, vanille, hope.  Had vanille debuff him and cause poison and hope buff my party.  I was able to beat him within a couple of minutes with the new setup and didnt even have to worry about him trying to cast the death spell.  Poison really eats at him and having three medics made it so I could keep the pressure on and not spend too much time healing.  Sentinals suck for that battle.

Man, did anyone read Destructoid's review of FFXIII?  Oh the humanity.  Thing is I honestly can't disagree with any of Sterling's points in particular, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't enjoying the game.

I don't really mind a game being linear. Grandia 2 on the Dreamcast/PC was linear and yet it was still a fun, interesting game.

I do have some problems with the story. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is somewhat confused. Some things are cleared up later on, but I still don't understand enough. I feel like it's my fault and that I missed something.

I disagree about his critique on its music. I listened to the soundtrack weeks before I bought the game and really enjoyed it. Now that I've heard the music in game, I can appreciate it even more. The songs Sustained by Hate, Lost Hope, that blues song (too lazy to look up the name), Hanging Edge, and the Battle Theme all sound different and are very memorable. I can't wait to hear the piano collections cd for this game. =)

It was alright it being linear but I really like being able to go where I want and do side quests whenever I want.  I dont really agree with the review considering I loved the game and am working on my 1000/1000 right now.  Sure there are some flaws but overall it was a great game and by far the best RPG I have played since tales of vesperia.  I was a little confused at the beginning but reading through the data logs helped and I figured most things out for myself.  After a while I got used to Vanille's voice and actually started to like it.  I really wonder what this game could have been though if they didnt port it to the xbox.

This would be my only complaint.  It relies on the datalogs too much.  I'm not as far into the game as you guys are (chapter 6, maybe 12 hours or so), but that's really my only complaint.  I honestly can't say I remember playing a FF game that wasn't linear.

I think most people are using the term "linear" where they actually mean "on rails." Most FF games allow you to explore side paths far more often than XIII does. Personally the latest game reminds me alot of VII where you were pretty much confined to a small area and the way forward was usually obvious (until you got out of the city).
