FFXIII uses an Active Time Battle system that is found in most of their games. It's a turn based variation, but it is not "turn based" in the sense that you attack, then enemy attacks, repeat. If you sit there and and take forever to choose what you're going to do, the enemies will keep hitting you. This is how most of the main FF games work, so yeah, if you went in expecting a traditional action game you didn't really do your homework.
SuperRick: I was assuming it was kind of like an MMO, where when you activate an action it take a couple seconds to complete (varies for the action) and as soon as that action is complete you can do another action. Not turn based pure se, but not button mashing either. Is my assessment pretty close?

yea but it almost feels like everything has to wait the same amount of time to attack again, in a sence, it feels like a turn based game.
I'll add, what seems to make FFXIII a little different is your character's ATB gauge seems to be segmented into essentially multiple bars, which allows you to choose multiple actions in a full "turn" and lets you weigh the cost of waiting for the gauge to fill completely for more advanced moves or several simpler moves, and getting a quick action in as soon as possible. Each action has its own time bar requirement per se.
yeah it's turn based/you have to tell the character when to attack, heal, use the bathroom, etc.
This is why I've never finished a FF game. They look pretty and all but I get tired of the combat system halfway through the game. I end up finishing the story via youtube.
It's real time active turn based. Once you get past Chapter 3 you will get many more battle options. FFXIII's combat is highly addictive, complex, and fun. Many people will play this game for 1-2 hours and say it sucks but that's not the case at all. For whatever reason Square Enix thought it was a wise idea to have the first 2-3 hours having every battle just rely on mashing the x button...

Finally I am getting into the good part. After 2hrs of button mashing I can finally start to strategize. I love being able to level up my characters now and the leveling system reminds me somewhat of the FFX sphere system.

true, but its not quite as expansive or branched as i would have liked. i feel like someone else said earlier in that th game is more of a movie. The customization comes down to just opening up the menu and pouring CP into whatever class you like. It really doesnt make a whole lot of difference which class you do.
and the combat i think is too automated. you can only control one character and have a choice of probably about 3 moves at any one time, and the auto attle command will automatically choose the best one.
I feel like a lot of the strategy has gone out the window, as im no longer taking calculated moves, rather than frantically attacking so as to not waste time. Also i would like to choose what my teammates do insead of simply saying, "act like a medic" or "use a lot of magic."
Chambered: tripper182: i just wish they would advertise better, some people are probably pissed because they thought it was gonna be button mashing or something It's a Final Fantasy game. Most of the people who would even be remotely interested in the game have known about it for years and have either already bought, or are intending to buy it as soon as they can. They also know pretty much exactly what to expect from the game. The others are either too young to have played a Final Fantasy game (9 years since the last good one?), or people who never really cared for RPGs but heard about how big this game was supposed to be.

I'm up to chapter 7, and so far it's doing a damn good job of at least rivaling it. Helps that the acting is actually pretty good, all the characters are deep. I love the whole 13 days flashback system they've been going with, kinda reminds me of Lost in a way.
Its real-time combined with turn-based. Basically their is no limit to an attack or ability u pull off, its all based on when u can move and attcak. This combat system i like, since it actually does not let u button mash the same thing over and over, it makes u have ur controller at ur hand at all time. It gets better and better overtime through the game.
I won't go as far as saying that I hated FFX but I have tended to notice people that say that they loved it haven't played too much FF. VII, VI, Tactics, XII To each his own

Personally, X was the only game I truly enjoyed past VII. IV and VI are my faves.

Sorry, it hasn't been 9 years since a good Final Fantasy. Its been 3 years and about 4 months. FWIW, FFX is one of my least favorite RPGs. Though I'm loving FFXIII so far oddly enough. I just can stand those FFX characters and their designs at all. At all at all at all.

I think the majority of people who consider X to be the last good FF title consider XII to be so radically different that it's not appealing to them.
I enjoyed XII's story, but absolutely hated the battle system because it felt too different from the rest of the series. FWIW.
See as far as XII goes, the battle system itself (at least the mechanics) was pretty much the only thing I liked. I thought the level design and art direction were terrible. The characters were boring, and the story more so. And boss battles required 0 strategy.
