I pick up crappy games all the time only to send them out a couple days later with no achievements and only one or 2 hours of play time. If I take out the disc for something else within the first few hours of receiving it then that means its probably not going to ever get played.
Examples of this were Bakugan, Divinity II, Street Fighter 4, Way of the Samurai 3, Dragon Ball Z Infinite World, Dynasty Warriors 6 and there were probably some others as well.
If it's a game I've been wanting to play, then generally I'll try to get it. Otherwise, no.
On a totally unrelated note, Hour of Victory should be arriving in the mail any day now.
To the OP. I loved the Matt Hazard title...though it was too much of a pain to bother plat'ing in. The humor was solid and the shooting was good enough.
On topic, I'm cheap so I get torn regardless of the price. Almost bought PD Zero for the 360 last night....new at $5.98. I loved the original, but I hear this one is terrible so I ended up deciding against it. Maybe it was just the platform though, as I tend to take these 'risks' all the time when STEAM has a game on sale at $5 or less. I'm looking at you, Universe at War...the download took longer than my total play time.

I used only play games that received high ratings, but with reviews being extremely biased (or bought) now I ignore them. I'll play what I want and if it turns out to be a disappointment I can always list it here

Sometimes it's fun to pick up a game that got trashed by reviews just to see how bad it is. For the most part I don't even know what the reviews are on a game until people on forums start talking about it. Review sites are a form of propaganda I choose to stay away from.
I picked up Bionic Commando at newegg for $8 shipped. Game is not great, but definitely worth $8.
Also, Dark Sector is a great game that can be had for cheap.
Dynasty Warrior games (of all their types, from the Gundam ones to the Samurai ones) all get universally panned by reviewers but I love them! There's something so addictively awesome about them that I enjoy playing them.
Mercenaries 2. I heard nothing, but complaints and I just didn't understand it. Especially after the demo. Are there bugs? Yep. In fact, I had to restart a mission once from a bug, but for like $15 at the time, I'll forgive. People dogged the graphics, the gameplay and the bugs, but none were bad enough to really pull out the waaaambulance. I'll leave the rest of the sale pitch behind, but I really had a ton of fun with it.

OH! Yes, Gundam Dynasty Warriors. That's actually what I was thinking about. Both were really good and really panned. But who cares? I just plain love those games.
Matt Hazard was probably the big one for me. Funny as hell but the game was simply awful.Other than that, being an achievement whore I've played (and finished) the worst. Soldier of Fortune Payback (which is the true definition of 'guilty pleasure') Vampire Rain, and Turok (which actually isn't that bad) have been my latest weapons of choice

I liked this too. It was a definite guilty pleasure, bugs and glitches and all.
My favorite part was when you get to the final showdown with the guy you've been chasing after for the whole game, and during the climactic cutscene the characters' mouths were moving but no words were coming out.
Sums up the whole game, really.
I do it all the time. Mostly because I know my tastes.
One of my favorite games is the PS3 Gundam game. I loved the hell out of it.
The problem I see with reviews of games isn't so much a problem with the game, it is the cost. Almost every game out here comes out at $60 regardless of the budget and quality of the work. The problem with that is the perception of quality. If a game is $60, you would demand high quality. However, counterbalancing that is the perception that if something is only $30 at release, something must be wrong with it. Currently, after 2 to 4 weeks, you can really see the floaters as the price plumits (which is normally the sweet spot when I decide to pick up games that are on the borders of what I want).
Games need to shift their paradigm and truly embrace a variable pricing scheme and evaluate if the lower cost would push enough more in units to make up for the difference.

Deadly Premonition: So bad it's good.... but also so unique you can see the potential it might've had with a bigger budget and some skilled artists / programmers.

Sometimes the reviews are just plain wrong. I bought a DS mainly to play Shiren the Wanderer, despite the bad reviews. Many of the reviewers had never played a Roguelike before and didn't understand how that type of game works.
Also, I recall that one reviewer gave Mass Effect a terrible score because apparently he thought it was a shooter, not an RPG, and he was repeatedly failing missions because he didn't know he had to level up his character or change his equipment.
Oh well got matched for OverLord II before Avatar and now I don't have enough for Avatar. Oh wellz
