I'm sure to get a lot of love for this one:
"The theory of Global Warming states..."
This obviously works in many ways. Some of you might not even be aware of this one because of how heavily the media has saturated the misunderstanding:
In terms of the scientific method and the laws/rules which must be adhered to in order to call something a theory, "Global Warming" or "Global Climate Change" based on the idea of Human cause is not actually even a theory yet. For something to become a "theory" it must be tested extensively with the evidence available. Since accurate and extensive testing cannot yet be performed with the technology we have today, the idea of Global Warming/Global Climate Change as caused by mankind is still just a hypothesis.
It is a well supported hypothesis with a lot of evidence, but being that even theories can be disproven and this one isn't even a theory, I find it hard to believe that this one will stand the test of time -- especially since the numbers originally used to push the idea into the limelight of the media don't hold up to the numbers we have today which show relatively little change at all, and actually show over the last 10 years a drop in temperature worldwide as opposed to a rise.
But yeah...just saying...aint even a theory yet, stop calling it that. Even scientists make that mistake, it's actually quite funny.
I don't really want to get into some huge debate about it, I'm just pointing out the facts here and that a lot of people claim this as an actual theory when they are "trying to sound smart". Personally, I think if you're really planning to take any of this seriously, you should talk first and foremost to a Geologist. Why? They know the earth. That is their field of study. They know what it can and can't do, and have a pretty profound understanding of what real effects if any that even a large species like the human race could have on the planet. Most geologists I've spoken to or heard from have said that it's all a bunch of BS. However, there is evidence of something going on, it just seems to me like "blame ourselves" is the wrong answer to immediately, with barely any study, come to the conclusion of.
EDIT: OH YEAH! another good one is of course "It just snowed 10 inches here, GLOBAL WARMING MY ASS!".
Localized weather has nothing to do with the idea of GLOBAL climate change. I always get a kick out of people who say stuff like that. =]
For the latest news on Games, Movies, and everything geeky!
"Scare money, Don't make money"
anyone who says "irregardless" (i think thats from family guy) and also anyone who uses "ergo" in a sentence

Lets start off with
"Ethics class"
Ethics are a personal value. It can't be taught, it can only be molded into you while you're growing up. A class when you're 20 years old or even past 14 is very likely pointless. Your ethics should be fairly well grounded by then and someone else just wants to lecture you on what THEY think your ethics should be.
"Weapons of Mass Destruction"
Misschiefmaker should love this one. Lets go to iraq, capture the head of one regime, hand him to another regime and let THEM have a "fair trial" with him. It'd be about the equivalent of someone taking over the US, kicking out democracy and replacing it with taliban law and then handing Bush over to them for a "fair trial". Bush would be hanged in that case btw.
I'd think of more, but I need to go play some games now. ^ ^
chaostheory:Bush would be hanged in that case btw.
Maybe I should have named this thread "Bash Bush" because that's what it seems like all it really is. It's amazing how long liberals can stay butt hurt. The intent of the thread was not to be political at all, after the first opening salvo against Bush I thought I'd provide some balance by thowing some Clinton lines in. Since then there have been a few good lines but most are just regurgitated and tired Bushisms.
Oh, and I'm not a Bush fanboy. I think Barry, W, Slick Willie, and Read My Lips were at best somewhat mediocre and at worst VERY BAD for our country. I like it when nothing get's done in Washington, because then it typically means they're not creating any more problems.
The last president I would say was "good" was Ronald Reagan. Yes liberals, I'm guessing you can find some dumb things he said too. But one good thing he said was "Government is not the solution to the problem, government is the problem." If you want to blame the bad economy on anything it's the government screwing around with banks. If they left well enough alone we'd all be in a lot better shape.
I hear some variation of this a lot:
"Existentialism is actually a very positive philosophy."
"All extremist need to be shot"
truck driver at work said "the fact that you think this is irrelevent is completely irrelevent to me"
chaostheory: From Dictionary.com 1. a coherent group of general propositions used as principles of explanation for a class of phenomena: Einstein's theory of relativity. 2. a proposed explanation whose status is still conjectural, in contrast to well-established propositions that are regarded as reporting matters of actual fact. 3. Mathematics. a body of principles, theorems, or the like, belonging to one subject: number theory. 4. the branch of a science or art that deals with its principles or methods, as distinguished from its practice: music theory. 5. a particular conception or view of something to be done or of the method of doing it; a system of rules or principles. 6. contemplation or speculation. 7. guess or conjecture.
This.
Quoting the Dictionary.
People do it to try and sound smart.
The sad fact is, the Dictionary does not know all, and it does not adequately explain the scientific method for theory. Since I was clearly referring to the scientific theory and the Dictionary makes almost no attempt to explain the scientific theory in this passage, the act of quoting the Dictionary becomes completely pointless.
Just to show how pointless it is, I'm sure that you'd get similar results for "Theory" and "Hypothesis", although in the scientific world these two subjects are very different.
They teach the scientific method in grade school. You should know this stuff!

Everyone gets a chance to have their fair say." “African Americans watch the same news at night that ordinary Americans do.” "It depends on how you define "alone" ... there were a lot of times when we were alone, but I never really thought we were."
