Ohh and one more thing. If hockey is "Canada's" game, why did you lose two professional teams in the last 20 years due to poor fan support? I can understand a place like Arizona not caring, but camon' Winnipeg and Quebec, so much for hockey fans.

That's your argument?  Winnipeg and Quebec City didn't/don't have the economy to support the salaries of their players, especially when they get paid in American dollars.  Not ever city has the luxury of charging $100+ per ticket like Toronto does.

If baseball is America's pass-time why do the Natinals have a better record than that Nationals?

Give Hockey USA a few more years and a few more Canadians and they'll own 2014.

Big Smile

I expect the US to do very well with the crop of young talent they have.  With the population size they should dominate as the game grows in popularity (which it is).  Burke built a gold medal team that fell just short.

Babcock and Buongo tried to give the Americans the game at the end, but I guess it wasn't meant to be.  Seriously, who plays the trap with a 1 goal lead for 30 minutes?  I was cursing up a storm, even shesnrice was pissed.  Luongo's inability to catch the damn puck was infuriating..he's a damn goalie.  He will always be a great no-pressure goalie, but he folds like a wet napkin in big games.  Happened in the Q, the WJHCs, the WHCs, NHL playoffs, etc.

Great game, my heart stopped twice; once when Parise buried the tying goal, and again when Crosby buried the winner. It was mayhem all over Canada, just phenomenal. The US didn't have the highest expectations, but I wouldn't say they were filled with a bunch of 'nobody's'. Burke picked a great team, and Wilson coached a great tournament. This thread wouldn't exist if it weren't for criminolelawyer, so I say party on. If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen!

Burke said he fully expected his team to win.  I can't disagree with him.  IMO they outplayed Canada for a majority of the game.  A few Canadians (Nash, Staal, Doughty, Morrow, Toews, etc.) played amazing, others (Boyle, Pronger, Bergeron, Luongo) played like crap.  I was really impressed by Parise and Kessler though, they both had outstanding tourneys.  I can't say enough about Miller, imagine him on a better NHL team (like the Flyers Embarrassed ).

Both shesnrice and myself jumped off the couch...our rottie bit my ass Sad  After the pain went away I thought, "The US and some Goozers will be livid that Crosby scored"...I couldn't wipe the grin off my face.

As a non-hockey fan, I'd like to put my 2 cents in.  I watched the 1st period, turned it off and watched the last 2 minutes of regulation and overtime.  I would have watched the whole game, except for a vet appointment for my dog.  It was compelling, and it will be the only time I watch hockey between now and the next time the US is in a gold medal game.

I hope that this does thread does not end up in bitterness and gloating.  I haven't read the thread that was started after the US beat Canada earlier in the Olympics, so that may have already been started, but I hope not.  The Olympics should be a time to celebrate achievements of all, not a time to fight (unless boxing is an Olympic sport).

End of the story is that Canada won.  I don't care how much better they were than the US team, or the expectations for both teams.  If the US didn't expect to win a medal but still made it to this game and put up a fight, it proves nothing against the Canadian team.  It just means that the US team exceeded their expectations.  The Canadian team expected to medal, and hoped for the gold medal, and they did that!  Along the way, they even beat the Russian team, which I understand to have been the other gold medal favorite.  The Canadian team deserves all the congratulations.

Aren't forum moderators suppose to quell post that are inherently flame-laden, instead of contribute to it? I would have figured any topics that begin with "HEY AMERICANS" or conversely "HEY CANADIANS" would have gotten locked immediately. In order to keep the status quo. No one wants to start a pissing match; this is even more important when the site is built upon trading with one another.

I wish not to contribute subsequent to this post, however, it just seems like bad etiquette. /thread locked that's enough - carry on with life.

We assumed that both of these threads are in good spirits and that nobody is going to go off the deep end and throw poutain or cheese steaks at each other.

I should add that a majority of the posts in both threads have been respectful and full of good natured jabs.  Those that aren't can/will be removed.

G-Nitro:

It's still hockey. Outside of Canada and the Northeast US, no one cares. :P

Say that to the Russians, Fins, Swedes, Slovaks and Czechs ;)

It's still the 4th most watched team sport in the world, after Football (as in soccer), Rugby and Cricket.

Well naturally Burke would say he expected his team to win. The same can be said about the Finns, the Swedes, Russians, Canadians, Czech's and Slovaks. Every team thought they had put together a winning team. In terms of international rankings, the US was ranked 6th (I'm not 100% sure), so in that respect, they were an outside shot at winning a medal, but superb goaltending can go a long way in a tournament like this, like someone else mentioned. Of course, the reverse could happen, a la Kiprusoff in the semi-final match.

While I don't care much about hockey, I'd of probably watched this game had I known.

What's wrong with poutine? It may be the unhealthiest meal known to man, but it sure is tasty. Pizza

And I'm sorry if I'm one of the users avidav referred to. While I meant every post of mine in this thread in a light-hearted nature (I'm actually quite happy that this hockey tournament was closely fought and that it really could have gone both ways), I can see how some could've been offended by my comment regarding american "arrogance", and I apologize for that comment to anyone who was offended. Thanks to mafafu for taking it like I meant it though, namely entirely tongue in cheek.
