So here is the story... I was playing assassins creed 2 and i sys crash a few times first time it had done that. Anyway today i have playing though Mass Effect 2 for the 2nd time when my 360 froze up. when I restarted it made me update. then worked fine for about an hour. Then froze again. Again made me update but this time it freeze in the restart after updating. So i turn it off and on it wants to update again. Of coarse it freezes on restart. if i say no to the update i can start any game but they all freeze like 30seconds in. i have heard this is the start of the ring of death but i am not getting any rings...
i tryed clearing the cash on the HDD but did make and difference.
Anyone know anything about this problem?
Yep, it sounds like you are on your way to an RROD. January of last year I was playing Prince of Persia on my 360, and it kept sort of freezing and looking very pixelated. It drove me nuts, then all of a sudden it kept freezing. Then when I turned it back on I had the RROD. But after about 15 minutes I was able to play 1 hour of COD before it froze again. Then nothing would work and the red lights where there staring me in the face.
So from what happened to me and friends I know, it all starts with a little bit of freezing, then kerplunk it dies.
It's only a matter of time. You can always take measures to speed up the process.

Perhaps microwave it?
Wrap it in a blanket?

Generally anything to increase the amount of heat. When mine started to go I just left it on in a poorly vented place
Mine did that about a month ago ( I am on my 5th) I took my air compresser and blew in every hole for about 5 min. You wouldnt believe what was coming out of there, best to do outside. It has working great ever since. give it a trym you migt be pleasantly surprised like I was
mine did something similiar a couple of months ago when trying to play COD4; turns out there was a problem with the Live network

He should try and disconnect the network cable or wireless device out of the 360 so it has no means of connecting to the network. If it's the network then the xbox should work perfectly fine unhooked and if it doesnt well that rules out that option.
Pm me your email addy for Lockerz invite have 9 left redemption coming soon

tried that just crash 2 or 3 mins into any game...
I'm always amazed that microsoft has developed a product with such a high failure rate -- yet gamers (including myself) didn't consider switching over to the PS3 (ok wii if you must). My theory is that XBL is itself a superior product/service that overcomes the hardware failure of the consoles. And you pay for that too! Brilliant!
To the OP -- I hope everything turns out ok -- not a fan of RROD.

Holy Crap!!!
A compressor??!!
What size compressor and psi were you using?
I would be pretty nervous about trying something like that knowing first hand the power of a compressor.
LOL, I was nervous, but the thing was already broke so I said wtf, let me try. About 45 psi and i held it back a little bit...I'm telling you man my xbox is on constantly and I havnt had a problem since....knock on wood
I stuck it in a blanket for like 15mins and now it's working... i never RROD or anything... guess we will how long it lasts... at least if i get RROD i would have warranty

For me I would give up on Xbox but i LOVE Mass Effect 1 and 2.. the first one is why i bought a 360
Yes it sounds like your 360 is doing it's death march. I am on my 3rd 360. Play your games from your disc tray rather than installing them, do a lot of wear and tear, hours of gaming untill that red ring appears. It'll happen soon, check on xbox.com support section with your serial number to see if you are covered for a free repair. If so cool. if not then think about aborting the 360 altogether or getting a new arcade edition and pop your existing HDD onto it.
My 2nd 360 died of overheating, don;t know why it was on it's own airflow island, still xbox support wanted $100 to fix, $20 to ship and $30 for a 1 year warranty. yeah $150 and wait a while or $200 for a new system and controller and part out old sytem. the choice was easy, but still it made me curse the 360 for being a piece of crap hardware death box with a killer line up of games.
When you get a new xbox 360 i recommend you install the games you play onto the HDD so you don't over work it, that's why they made the option available.
best of luck and game on dude!
