I notice a lot of people mentioning the PSX games available on the marketplace. Keep in mind that ALL PS3s including the new slim have PSX BC.

The only thing at odds here is the PS2 BC which has been noted correctly several times in this thread.

The sad part being that there are no PS2 games available on the PSN. I had read that the reason was they required an emulator to run and if you include the emulator it just gives the PS3 software based BC for PS2 games as previously mentioned. (the requirements for PS2 games on PSN is the one thing I am unsure of)

I have a 60GB and a library of 40 PS2 games. I would not be happy without BC and that was a main buying point for me. But for others, as pointed out, BC is not a big deal. It all boils down to what you deem important.

This is an excellent page with the differences between all the console releases of the PS3.

Sony was losing money so it (emotion engine) was removed.  Later, pre-slim ps3's BC was emulated, worked just as well.  If it is a major thing for you just buy a ps2.  there aren't any benifits to playing old games on a ps3 other than saving space or for an all in one fun console.  Save the wear and tear and buy a cheap ps2.

or

try to find the MGS4 80gb Bundle that was the last ps3 console to offer BC of ps1 and ps2 games through emulation.

or any 20gb, 40gb, 60gb, 80gb ps3 consoles.

hope this helps.

I think they ripped out the PS2 Backwards Compatability because the PS2 was selling so well. Why give people something for free in the PS3 when you can make them buy a whole new system? why undercut your sales of the PS2 by giving that away on the PS3?

There are two consoles.

One plays PS2/PS1 games.

The other plays PS3/PS2/PS1 games.

The one that plays all three formats is not selling well.

The one that plays only two of the formats is selling well.

Rip out one of the formats from the console that plays all three formats. It's not selling well anyways, it's a newer design, it's not going to hurt anything for future models or future sales of the new console to remove said compatablitiy with the older format.

Watch as sales for the new console stay the same, while sales for the old console continue to if not rise, at least remain steady.

The basic idea is to be future proof in terms of profitablity and branding. Sony wants to show off not only their sales, but what their sales indicate. They want to be able to show strong sales for an old, some would consider "dead" console, because the "Ten Year Lifespan" is a part of their branding model for their consoles.

They'll probably refuse backwards compatibility in future consoles for similar reasons. However, based on their branding model and the recent success they have had with the PS3, that won't be happening til about 2014-2015.

Would you be interested in purchasing a PS3 backwards compatibility kit? It includes a PS2 slimline console and a roll of duct tape. Once attached, you'll be able to play any* PS2 game.  Make me an offer if you're interested.

*the PS3 backwards comparability kit is not region free
